You have to read tons and tons of shit, different styles, authors, eras, and experiment with all of them until you find a voice that doesn't feel douchey to you.

Eventually you'll have this gay moment of "hey, a combination of writing extremely short stories, beginning in medias res, written in a style ripped off from my 3rd favorite author with these three extra distinct quirks, and based on this core set of ideas I find interesting enough to extemporize on, actually allows me to write something that feels authentic!" Except that whole thought won't be conscious, it'll just be a feeling.

It takes a long fucking time. It's like the #1 reason writing is so hard for most people these days.
