Why am I told that I have to read in order to obtain cultural capital? This is just a marketing scheme, right? The same with all this Western Canon stuff, right?

These days, the ones with cultural capital are the ones who played EarthBound upon its original release in 1995. Not joking.

everyone has cultural capital. not everyone has valued cultural capital. the term comes from pierre bourdieu.
this just means that everyone has some cultural things (beliefs, values, etc.) to offer society; however, society (being an assimilation system) only values certain forms of cultural capital, shunning or out-casting capital that does not conform with what it values.
