>major international player

*vapes in your direction*

China is already a world power. It's pretty much colonized Africa already. But the fact is it has a corrupt political system, a disgusting backwards pseudo-Western culture, a brutal legal system and no aesthetic standards at all. It's one giant Kowloon Walled City. Observing China from space is like watching flies reproduce on a piece of dog feces. I'm sure it's fun walking around Guangzhou in your leather trenchcoat, black sports shades and pinstriped fedora while the hunchbacked peasants clack and hurry around your slow-moving gait, but in reality the only reason you enjoy it is because you enjoy a sense of superiority there that you know you will never experience anywhere else as a result of your autism and lack of social grace. Who cares if it's going to be a "major international player"? All that means is that a bunch of figures will change on official government documents. Regardless of muh GDP or muh exports you will still be living as the only semi self-aware human being in a sea of callous clones. But, hey. Who am I to judge right? I mean I'm sure you enjoy taking financially desperate girls who were lucky not to be aborted (forcefull or otherwise) back to your cube-like apartment where you can eat your gutter oil-based food and watch a Chinese imitation of Rush Hour 2 with a Uyghur playing Chris Rock's character. I'm sure it's great wheezing through the smog each morning to teach a bunch of kids who look like anime burn victims how to say "good afternoon!" and "my parents wanted a son!". I wouldn't be at all surprised if your face bears a wide and expressive smile as you stand at your window at night and watch the diesel-guzzling trucks spewing black smoke as they and other vehicles traverse a street lined with the bodies of deceased children. I mean why wouldn't you enjoy the prospect of dressing in your favorite imitation Armani tshirts sewed by some eight year old in Shenzhen and then stepping into an elevator knowing that today may very well be the day it plummets all fifty stories of your poorly engineered apartment building or traps you inside its doors, leaving you to starve as a nation of consumers squat near their bulky televisions and eat rice with chopsticks while watching a reality TV show in which your death inside the aforementioned elevator provides the entertainment. Well good luck buddy, to you and your Samsung wife and your pudgy, asthmatic son who you really didn't expect to look like that.

I won't shut up okay so back the eff off. Look kid, the fact is I live in a detached bungalow and pay rent so low that I almost feel bad for the landlord. My cute half-Russian girlfriend lives here with me and we both study literature at Iowa State, me having earned a three-year paid scholarship in the MFA program and her earning a degree to teach elementary school. I mean I come on this board and see people from Estonia, from New York and from places where their lives for whatever reason, usually economic and romantic, are so depressing that it makes me almost bad for them. I'm almost done editing a 67k word novel a year early, meaning that once its's published by Coffee House Press next Winter I'll have an entire year to promote it and to otherwise spend my time here in Iowa City writing short stories for the weekly class and just enjoying my life. Do you even comprehend the notion of enjoying your life any more kiddo? I thought not. There are people on this board working thirty, forty sometimes fifty hours a week while harboring ambitions of "making it" in literature. Meanwhile I spend my days waking at ten am, eating warm muffins and drinking cups of black coffee on the small wooden red-and-white oilcloth-covered table with my cute, Amelie-esque girlfriend who sits grinning and sipping her cinnamon tea as we discuss our plans for the week or some aspect of our course the other person expresses an interest in learning more about. I own a second-hand Volvo which looks beat up in a way that suggests the exact kind of poverty I'm looking to associate with my "brand" (every contemporary writer needs a brand) and I use it to drive to the library each day where I sit in a thick flannel shirt and sit at a table illuminated by a horizontal rectangular lamp while propping up my forehead with fingers placed to project my studiousness and complexity to others, only to drive home in the evening feeling a calm ease towards my life and walking up the three concrete steps and stepping through the screen door and then the wooden front door to find my qt gf baking in the kitchen with an apron on and a little flour on her cheeks which I rub off as she grins and asks me about my day. What do you have in your life that equates to this? Huh? I'm waiting for an answer...That's what I thought. Literary fame will be mine before the year is through. Meanwhile the rest of your year, and the rest of your life after that, will consist of a slow decline towards an obscure death remarked upon by nobody. I am literally and unironically eating a warm McDonalds cheesburger as I type this, the onions and mustard and tomato ketchup causing me to experience an overwhelming rush of pleasure as I continue to chew and swallow and digest my second meal of the day after a breakfast cooked by an individual to whom I am the love of their life.

The funny thing about your perspective (and your existence) is that you seem to be under the impression that genius is only achievable to those who consume drugs, illicit or otherwise, in order to scale the heights of their own intellectual talent. The fact is I haven't drunk coffee in two years. I don't drink alcohol. I don't consume any sort of drugs. I eat a vegan diet and I only drink soda when the torture of my alienation becomes so intense that eating junk food provides the only recourse. Do you know what it feels like to be pure? I mean you probably can't even recall the period of your life during which your mind and body were unsullied by erotic desire, poor nutrition and a faulty perspective of internal and external reality.

>outlive

Hehe, you almost had me going there for a second buddy. You're good, but not good enough. Fact is as you gain physical muscle and invest more in your physical presence in the world I gain intellectually and internally. But wait, let's say we do meet in the real world and enter into a physical contest. Fact is for all your size and weight I am in comparison faster, more stealthy, and more nimble in my movements. Remember that old tale about David and Goliath? You won't be so cocky when you're lying on the sidewalk with cartoon birds circling your skull will ya? Hehe. I can picture you flailing those big arms of yours with your nostrils dilating and your eyes wild with confusion as I dodge and dart around you, entertaining the short Chinese exchange students in their oversized navy hooded sweatshirts purchased from the store on campus as they giggle behind their pale hands and exchange glances to communicate how cute I am and how attracted they both are to me. I can see you like a trapped animal beating against the reinforced glass at the zoo as I, the wise zookeeper, flirt with tourists who ask to have their photo taken with me while you, bruised and exhausted, stand panting in the background in your allotted space. I am lithe. I am aesthetic. I would even describe myself "svelte" if I knew what it meant. I have zero physical flaws and my so-called mental flaws (judged so by a society which thrives on mediocrity) only enhance my genius and potential. And as for outliving me, that word that made me guffaw rather sinisterly while I sit wearing my brown cord pants with my legs crossed in a way that would appear effeminate should I not possess every external signifier which qualifies a man as being a representation of the masculinity native to his sex, I will not only outlive your mortal existence, my name will outlive yours once we have shed our respective existential coils. In two-hundred years kids will be lining up at their local library to ask if my books are in stock yet while a mere three months after your death your own mother, the only person who will care about you when you do eventually part ways with consciousness, will struggle to accurately recall your appearance.

No, but my neighbours from downstairs actually are. The sounds they make sometimes, late at night when I'm shitting and reading on the toilet, are downright disturbing. To top it off they're this young couple of yokels -- they don't seem to be over twenty -- who appear to have popped in the city straight from Goatfucksville down by the Danube swamplands. Ugly as a donkey, both of them; she's actually more repulsive that him. I wouldn't be too amazed if they were siblings or something. The one who appears to be the male stands for hours on end in front of the apartment building, regardless of weather or season, in a pair of Adidas tracksuit shorts, white socks (Adidas, of course) and black plastic slippers (need I say it?), downing sunflower seeds (a staple snack food in these parts), expertly spitting out the husks from the corner of his mouth as he talks on the phone, while his half-Pekingese half-opossum mongrel has a shit in the middle of the alley or begs food from passers-by (I don't think they ever feed it). The guy just sits there, either eyeing the prime grade cuties from the nearby junior high or thumbing through his facebook feed. The female I have bumped into a few times on the stairs, each time hunched over two bags of groceries. To my surprise she greeted me politely each time in a subdued voice. The first time I was too amazed to answer -- does she think I'm the crude oaf? While her concubine is out ostensibly walking the dog, I imagine she is either slaving above the stove making use of those groceries or camwhoring solo. They blast peasant music day and night and they deep fry fish that smells as if had succumbed of natural causes long before being pulled out of the sewers.
Yesterday I hear that their poorly fed dog -- who is no larger than a well fed cat -- bit the eight year old neighbours' boy -- a meek and rather feeble-minded creature whose good nature is being constantly abused by his impish three year old sister who loves to steal whatever material possession he holds dear and to smack the living shit out of him -- seriously, I've seen her bitchslap him over the kidneys (she can't reach the face yet) so hard that he went reeling. I can't think of anybody else I'd be sorry for, but this kid getting bit by that wretched half-bred beast is an injustice which I hope to repay as soon as Fluffy (a faithful translation of its name) gets within range of my kids, which is also the range of my good foot (I sprained a knee last year, but Fluffy doesn't know which one, now does he?)
As I'm sure everybody on /lit/ is interested in future developments, I'll make sure to keep you posted.

It's all true, I swear, down to the dog's name.

I admit the camwhoring is just a rumour...for now. But how do you explain the following?

* They don't work. Both of them are always around the building or inside the house (I know this because I don't work either and they keep the door to their apartment half open whenever they're in, which is always)

*I refuse to even entertain the idea that those two are enrolled in any form of education.

* They don't seem to have anyone else to support them, like parents. They only receive visits from other like-minded and like-clothed individuals.

* The sex sounds seem simulated. Nothing sounds like that other than wildly overwrought orgasms or animal cruelty. I still hope its the former.

* The lady on the ground floor said so (she said "video-chat" and all but winked). She knows every thing. She sees more than the all-seeing eye of god and knows almost as much as the devil. She is watching, watching. She says she will never die.

Best novel ever written in Turkish is Tutunamayanlar. Here are two articles that'll help you get the idea of it:
https://theuntranslated.wordpress.com/2015/03/27/the-great-untranslated-tutunamayanlar-by-oguz-atay/
http://www.literatuuruitturkije.nl/english/language-is-the-mirror-of-our-lives-oguz-atays-novel-tutunamayanlar-and-its-dutch-translation/

Sadly, translation barrier can prove painful, as it's a book unique to the Turkish culture and Turkish language (in an intertwined fashion) in many ways.

It's more like Atay is like Turkish Nabakov+Joyce+Camus all in once, plus some of his individual qualities that come with some distinctly Turkish characteristics perhaps only identifiable by the children of that culture (and I mean myself by that).

>china is already "super power big

It's not, not in the way US is, it can't project power like US can(it may not have the ambition to, either) nor can it dictate international policy like US can. It's a major player in east asia but elsewhere it's like Russia in many way. It has to accommodate to the international policies in a way that the US doesn't have to.

>one of the biggest standing armies

Yeah in terms of manpower, because the main task of the army is maintaining internal stability. That's it. They don't have carrier groups(of which the US has 10) that can project the power of a mid-sized army nearly anywhere on the world, they don't have stealth bombers that can bomb pretty much anything without getting caught, they don't have the tactics or the material the US has, they don't have stealth jets, the list goes on and on. It's hilarious how OP US is in terms of military power, compared to the rest of the world. And that gives the US immense leverage.

China doesn't even consider an attack against US viable in any sort of way and their defence strategy against possible US attack is based on asymmetric warfare(read, they wouldn't engage US power head on because they know they'd get destroyed, instead they'd go taliban. Far more competent and technologically advanced than Taliban with far more options at their disposal).

>but on the other hand russia actually has superior scientists if u look at the best cryptography and computer science papers

IDK if this is true, even if it is, it's not that relevant. US sets the pace in pretty much every important field, it soaks up genious scientists from all over the world, it spends more money on research and development than anyone.

>> No.7801571

>their defence strategy against possible US attack is based on asymmetric warfare

that's their tactic because that is a proven way to defeat the united states, the united states couldn't win vietnam or afghanistan, you think they would have any chance in a country the size of china? the united states doesn't even have the balls to fight iran, a regional power a fraction the size of china

>> No.7801604

>>7801571
I hate to sound like a Republican, but the US didn't win in Vietnam and Afghanistan because its mission parameters were compromised. Vietnam was the birth of the "limited war" idea in American military thought. It was about trying to kill some portions of a population while supporting and befriending others. This doesn't work.

If you're going to subjugate a native population the British have the right idea. Go in and kill every able-bodied male. Negotiate with the women and the children and the elders. Then when the children grow up, kill them all over again.

If you're not prepared to soak an entire country in blood, war isn't worth it. Find another way.

this is classic american hubris, assuming everyone else is stupid because they are poor...the united states doesn't have a monoply on aryan bloodl, in fact the percentage of whites in america keeps dropping, i can't remember any chicacanos or indians winning the fields medal or turing award...really if u look at when america was the most dominant in terms of science and engineering it was right after world war two when they told all the german engineers they could either get executed in a show trial or come to america and work for nasa....sure we import a lot of second rate programmers and mediocre engineers from china, but unless we can get germany to give us another 2000 of their best scientists we just gonna keep falling back
