What are some good, relatively easy-to-read, philisophical works to read if I want to broaden my horizons without blowing my mind?

Pic related; It depicts most the fields of philosophy I'm interested in. Political philosophy is an interest as well.

Why don't you want to blow your mind?

Go with Noam Chomsky.

Last time I overwhelmed myself with knowledge I went into an existential crisis that lasted for several months. I want to avoid that, but I still want to improve my mind.

So you're interested in epistemology, ethics, philosophy of language, and political philosophy?

I don't know how well Kant fulfills the criteria "easy-to-read"

I would recommend finding some second-order philosophy, stuff written later summarizing philosophers like Kant, Hegel, Husserl. also read Nietzsche cause he rocks.

Well, I bought this about two weeks ago. It was an easy read, and is responsible for sparking this interest.

And I agree. I don't think I'm ready for Kant yet.

>Implying you'll ever be ready.

I can guarantee you you will get over philosophy.
You are one of those people.

>>768357
Yeah, there's no real way to be "ready" for Kant, although tackling him with some sort of guide or summary or teacher helps

>> No.768379

read originals. if you read about philosophers you will only end up with either wikipedia and/or some lesser philosophers interpretation of the real ones. Start with socrates.

does not compute.

start with basic stuff like Hesiod 'Theogony' and them move to monographies like Reale one (but beware - his interpretation of Parmenides is shit).

Philosophically speaking, are you more interested in Ontological, or Epistemological philosophy?

The Black Swan by Nicholas Nassim Taleb is probably right up your alley. Similarly Malcolm Gladwell's economic stuff like The Tipping Point.

Have a compass with which you broaden your horizons. That way if you read something that does blow your mind, you don't end up all depressed.

>does not compute.

I said 'realtively easy-to-read'. It just has to be an easy read in relation to other books written on the subjects.
