who says this? he wrote 8 or 9 plays at best. it makes him a contender with homer, dante, hafiz, proust, virgil, ovid, joyce, pynchon

You do know Ovid never wrote anything, right? metamorphoses are just a collection of various poems he edited and claimed as his own.

He was censored for going after Sir John Oldcastle. He turned up in Foxe's Book of Martyrs, and the author sheepishly admitted that he was the model for Falstaff!

The fact that Shakespeare was censored (for perceived insensitivity toward a Protestant martyr) has been entirely glossed over by scholars. It does suggest that he had a mind of his own on the subject, yet it makes you wonder what the real Oldcastle was like.

In King Henry V, Falstaff dies before Agincourt, but Oldcastle actually was burned at the stake around 1417.

>son of illiterate peasants
His father was literate, served as an alderman, was a prominent member of the leather-workers guild, and was mayor of Stratford at one point. That's not a peasant.
>little to no education
Henry VIII established free Latin grammar schools throughout England which were attended by boys of Shakespeare's class.

No one disputes thar Marlowe or Jonson wrote their own plays, and they had the same class background as Shakespeare. The only difference is that they wasted time at university while Shakes jumped right into the world of theatre.

>write adaptations of novels and ripped from the headlines plays
He drew upon a wide variety of sources for his plots, but this is more evidence that plot doesn't matter all that much compared to style.

Most dramatists prior to the nineteenth century derived the majority of their plots from existing sources. We don't talk shit about Sophocles for "ripping off mythology" because the plots themselves are not the reason we pay attention to classics. No one (except perhaps an überprole) doesn't like Oedipus because the twist has been "spoilered" by cultural references.

penmanship has nothing to do with anything. the fact that those 5 signatures are written by 5 different people does. if you're so illiterate you have to have someone else sign your name, i find it improbable that you wrote many plays.

>> No.7530211

>>7529628
There is a consistent style of writing in all of those signatures. My own signature doesn't look identical every time I write it. Also, in some of those signatures he abbreviates his name, which is obviously going to look different.
