/lit/, is the starter pack really just a meme, or does it actually hold some ground. I've been browsing for some time trying to get a grip on what i should start reading as i'm 19 and haven't read an actual book since my junior year of high school. Thanks.

Skip it and read The Tunnel by William Gass.

It does, but I might be able to specify more/reccomend better if you told your beliefs. Also, if your local library is good, just get books from there.

Connecting to BNW, for the greeks, start with Plato's The apology and work up to the republic, which covers philosophical beliefs on society, similarly to the final chapters of BNW. You might also like Crime and Punishment (be careful on translations, the prose doesn't always go over well) because it also handles somewhat similar topics, and has beliefs a bit similar to Fight club as well.

If you want something really short to get you back into reading, Tolstoy's short stories are a great place to start. My collection is from The Gospel in Tolstoy, but you could probably find them individually online. And, for philosophical works, starting with Plato (for me) was easier, including the apology, crito, and phaedo, simoly because I wasn't interested in the presocratics at the time. But if you read what you like, you really can't go wrong.
