church and classical pronunciation are well documented, and, like any language, a variety of dialects within these are also apparent, you're a darling mix of retarded and smug

Please enlighten me, dear intelligent and humble anon. Who is actually using Latin in conversation in 2015? The Church? They chant in Latin, sure, but you're wrong if you think the priests/cardinal/pope are communicating with each other in Latin.

The fact that Latin pronunciation is documented doesn't make it a living language all of a sudden; you'll be hard pressed to find anyone who uses it as an actual means of communication. The ritualised way in which the christian church is using latin is what's left of it.

Do I essentially have to take courses on Latin to learn it? Any way I can autodidact this?

>> No.7466805

>>7466773
Is there something wrong with you?

Latin is a dead language. The reason you should learn it is if you're into textual study of a specific, but very long, period in Western history. It's also helpful if you're in the sciences, particularly biological sciences.

Joke's on you, I can read some Latin. I'm just not delusional enough to claim to speak it.

You can Wheelock it, but if you want to autodidact Latin, why not go the full hog and learn Greek? Start with Pharr for that, and with both move on to actual texts not glosses ASAP. Learning Greek before Latin makes it easier to understand Golden Age Latin which regularly relies on the stronger Greek tradition.
