Much like Hemingway and Alan Moore, Whitman himself is great but everyone who came after him and tried to imitate him is fucking awful.

Someone explain to me why Donkey Hote is so revered? So far it's just "adventures of crazy man". Some of the wit and ridicule made me smile, barely, but most of it fell flat.

It seems like it would be funnier in the time it was written. Humor has changed.

The first part sucks, the humour at the start is low brow, and the digresive tales are boring. Everyone knows that. The genius in the book is seeing these characters interact with each other (and the author with the book itself) and grow over the course of the book. When you read the second part, you'll understand.

How do you mean?
I have serious problems with the lack of structure and direction in his poems.
They also come across as overly sentimental and more importantly incredibly dry and boring,
attributed mainly to the arbitrary listing off of random farming utensils and manufacturing equipment.

When lilacs last in the dooryard bloom’d,
And the great star early droop’d in the western sky in the night,
I mourn’d, and yet shall mourn with ever-returning spring.

Ever-returning spring, trinity sure to me you bring,
Lilac blooming perennial and drooping star in the west,
And thought of him I love.

How can anyone with an ounce of brain argue that this would have been better written as prose?

The structure is actually the prototypical free verse (which I know has been fucked to shit lately), but it was fresh and free at the time (think: taking Milton's blank verse a bit further).

As for the lists, those are mainly to suggest the interconnectedness of all things in the list, and they show the passion Whitman has for the things he was writing about. No one complains about long lists when it's Homer or Vergil or Milton doing it.
