Hello /lit/ as one of the well read board on the internet, I was wondering if you can help me decide on two subjects for a paper.

I am in an art history class, and I need to use 4 examples of art to show that it was an expression of power by a Roman Emperor.

Currently I have Trajans Column, and Augustus as Pontifex Maximus as examples. I am leaning towards Marcus Aurelius or Cladius as Jupiter as my other two.

What say you /lit/? Any others you would suggest?

I think Marcus Aurelius is fine, although I am partial to Hadrian's mausoleum in Italy.

I hadn't thought of that. But, is that really a symbol of Imperial power, or more of an architectural symbol of power?

I can sort of make a connection by way of its sheer size showing a relationship between Rome and the gods, but It might be a little flimsy.

Thanks though. You've given me a something to think on.

How about all those statues of Zeus where Caligula had the heads knocked off and replaced with his own likeness?

I'll take a look at that. Its definitely a imposing building. Especially for a tomb.

Thank you.

Would the Aeneid count? It's basically a long piece of Augustan propaganda, though with plenty of literary value.

Alright, so far I have confirmed is:

Trajan's Column, Augustus as Pontifex Maximus, and Marcus Aurelius.

I'm thinking of either using the Marcus Aurelius Equestrian or the Conquest and Clemency from the Constantine Arch. I'm a bit torn between the two...

In my opinion, the Pantheon was intimately connected to the imperial cult. It would be interesting to explore the building's "courtly" function in relation to the imperial judgments made on-site. The building/emperor combination must have blown the minds of the people involved in the more or less insignificant cases that Hadrian judged within the building as part of his imperial duties.

Hadrian: empire and conflict

Also, take a look at chapter 10 of "Measuring Heaven" by Christiane L. Joost-Gaugier if you can. It does a fantastic job at describing the structure and its intricate symbolism.

Thankyou all the same.

Lineup looks like Augustus as Pontifex Maximus, Column of Trajan, the Equestrian Statue of Marcus Aurelius, and finally Hadrians' Pantheon.

I dislike going out of chronological order.... but... eh.

Thanks again /lit/

Hope I'm not too late.

If it's power you're after, consider this statue of Constantine. It's in the Capitoline Museum right now, in pieces. The head is enormous. A right hand belonging to the statue is proportional. Such statues were erected in the fora of large towns not so much for worship but to overawe the inhabitants with the physically gigantic presence of Caesar Imperator. They are in fact images of Big Brother watching.
