There are some that just show ebooks. No more, no less. Others have features like 3G or wifi, online stores, browsers and simple games, etc.

Since I carry a laptop anyway, I didn't need all those features, so I bought a Sony PRS-505. But the nook and the kindle aren't bad, they're the two biggest ereader brands.

Kindle2 reader here. I have this entire database downloaded and I have found some quite good books within it that I simply emailed to my kindle which converts the text automatically. It's like 15 cents per megabyte, so costs nothing to send yourself a couple of books. PDFs and other formats you can drag and drop via USB. The new software update allows for much better reading of pdf files now. I wouldn't have any other reader, honestly. I want an iPad or HP Slate tablet when they come out but I will use that for med school and will still use my reader to read with. I wouldn't really want to use an iPad to read with given it's size comparison to my kindle. Plus, the kindle is easy on the eyes. I read for hours on end every day, and my battery lasts for weeks sometimes so long as i keep the free 3G wireless turned off. Just my $.02 but I am a kindlefag for life.

>> No.735624

>> No.735676

I can convert for free also, or just read anything in any other format. I choose to convert because it's easier that way and I don't mind spending a few dollars a month not to have to connect my kindle to my PC. Kindle charges with usb/wall cord as well, by the way.

>> No.735695

>I don't mind spending money in order to not connect a device to the computer I'm sitting next to

Amazon is brilliant. There are millions of lazy fatasses like you that can't bother to actually reach for their device. I bet it's sitting in your line of sight right now, as is the cord for it, and you'd still rather pay money to not get out of your chair.

>> No.735729

I'm a med student. A lot of times I have my laptop out with me on the go with no bag or charger. I dont carry any cords. Kindle is usually in my small bag or at home next to the bed so I rarely have the two in the same place. I send stuff to myself all the time and then it's there waiting on my kindle when I climb in bed. I have so many irons in the fire that I seriously don't mind paying a total of a few dollars a month to not have to remember everything I need to convert and usb into my kindle. Call me lazy, but I don't have time for that considering how many things I do a day.

it takes me two minutes tops to extract a file from a .rar archive, load it in Calibre, enter the metadata (a lot of pirated ebooks lack it and I'm a perfectionist), download the cover, convert it to a readable format (only really applies to .lit files iirc), and send it to my reader.

If I don't have that amount of time, I wouldn't be doing either of these two things:
-reading books
-posting on 4chan

>> No.735753

>>735695

So in response to your assumption, I must agree that yes, Amazon is brilliant to offer the service to make a dime on. I'm glad that they do. Also, for the price I end up paying for it, I don't really fucking mind. It literally totals all of the same price (in your terms) of what a slim jim and slurpy cost.

And oh yeah, it's also quite convenient to be able to study my notes right on my kindle when I climb into bed. I just email them to myself. Also, if there is a pdf or lecture that I want to go over, I just have someone email it to me so that I can go over it on my kindle when I get home. Maybe for someone like you there is no reason to do anything other than transfer via usb, but for me, the convenience is something I will continue to pay $2.00 a month for.

kthx...

>> No.735756

Can someone explain, please, when you buy an ereaders are you paying for the books as well (a licence) or do you pay for those separately and upload them onto your ereader, like how an mp3 player works with music?

I would like one of these, but I don't want to pay £200 for books if I can just download the ones I want for less...

Today is a holiday and my summer term doesn't start til Thursday. Thanks for concerning yourself with my leisure time, but come next week I am afraid that I will have to once again leave the USB cable at home. In the meantime, I can put it to use and stock up my kindle with fiction. If I didn't read for pleasure aside from school, I would lose my mind. It's my only escape, even if I only get a chapter or two in a night.

>> No.735773

That's not a bad analogy, at least for my 505 (dunno if more complex devices with more features work the same way). Think of it like an mp3 player for books and Calibre like...iTunes or other media management software, but for books.

>>735763
Why leave it at home? For that matter, proprietary cable plug? That sucks.

>> No.735786

>>735773

Honestly, I leave it at home because it is safer there. I don't really use it on the go, anyway, unless of course I am on vacation or something. But, seriously, I don't risk it being stolen or dropped or anything by leaving it at home. BTW, I'm not saying that I only use Amazon's email conversion... I'm just saying how easy and convenient it is to have it if you are a busy person. I do a lot of USB back and forth stuff. I especially use it to tap into my "clippings" file to manage quotes from books or notes or whatever that I have highlighted and saved. But, like I said before, it's the cost of a Mtn Dew per month to send myself a dozen books or notefiles from another computer (school labarotory) or from my laptop.

>> No.735800 [DELETED]

I highly recommend ebay for cheap ereaders.

ALSO: The industry is talking about releasing the next generation this fall. $99 is supposed to be a "sweet spot" of a price point. Even if not, the old generation will drop in price. So you'll be able to find a lot of cheap ones later this year, if you want to wait.

If not, well...ebay. A lot of these are completely new in box.

>> No.735855

I totally agree on the nickel and dime process. I run into those things more often than not, especially in the world of medicine. In fact, there would be no practice of medicine in the US if it weren't for nickel and diming! Haha. Anywho, I just really love my kindle for the convenience of what it is and what it offers. I don't mind paying a little here and there to have things done instantly for me. There are a lot of things I would forget in a day if I didn't just do them right then. And, like I said before, I love the size and simplicity of the kindle. I am looking into an iPad or other tablet to use for school, but I would still want to read on my kindle. I think reading off of a backlit screen on an iPad for a couple hours in bed would make me sick. I am an advocate for keeping the two seperated; eReader for reading, ipad/tablet for everything else.

I was only stating it so as to give everyone a background as to why I am on the go and for the sorts of things I use my kindle for (notes, lectures, pdf's, etc). And, btw, being in med school isn't anything special, nor is being a lawyer, regardless of what all the television and movies have made it out to be. Anyone can apply and go just as easily as anyone else, even if you are brokedick poor and using grants. People from those backgrounds tend to do better in the workforce anyway since they actually appreciate opportunity. A big contrast to spoiled Ivy league twats whose daddy's made them be doctors...

Some are more or less evenly split between two seperate genres and I didn't want to spark a ton of arguments and make books impossible to quickly search for.

And two, I haven't heard of a good 90% of these books before. Searching *every single* series, author, and novel would take a monstrous amount of time. Assuming two minutes per book with no breaks, snags, or the like, it would take 192 hours or so just for the books I already have

Hey - I feel soon this archive will be too big for mediafire - or rather, too unwieldy since mediafire only allows 200MB uploads and I'm far too lazy to actually pay for an account.

I have another 20GB of unsorted "material." I'm not promising I'll get through all of it but either way it's a damn sight more than I'm going to break up into 200MB pieces if I do.

I'm considering my options for web hosting - sorry, still impractical to seed a torrent, thank my ISP for that - but if anyone here has any suggestions I'm open to them.

I saw that on piratebay. I might download it if (IF) I ever finish sorting out the 20GB I already have or am downloading, unsorted. No sense adding to it until I get through what I have already. 'sides, this archive is like 50% scifi already.

I won't re-upload everything just yet, but sometime in the near future I'll be moving this to a friend's server so I don't have to deal with mediafire or arbitrary filesize limits.

'cause of this I think I'll merge the archive into a fewer number of files.

But you don't need to worry about that just yet, maybe in a few weeks or I dunno when.

ereaders don't have (or at least, most don'tm, and they don't need) backlights. They're printed on electronic paper and it looks just like reading a newspaper. E-ink is literally ink that just changes from black to white, it doesn't refresh 30-60 times a second like, say, LCD monitors do. It's a constant, stable image - it looks just like newspaper.
