So lit has forgotten the day's obligatory DFW post. So how about DFW not being a hack but rather one of the greatest writers of our time? Huh? What about how he is a intelligent, intensely moral writer who used his genius not for himself but for humanity? Huh? How about something positive??????

what's the deal with everyone hating DFW

>> No.7343855

yea most people here are only kidding about thinking he's a hack, they're just pissed that such a talented guy isn't only theirs, meaning that they're pissed that average joe's read his work and think he's a genius and jerk themselves off thinking they're smart now for having read him so they end up resenting him. He's undeniably extremely talented but also not for some people's palette. I can only imagine the circle jerk about him will get worse as his death gets further away and the inevitable infinite jest or pale king movie gets made. After that the average population will forget about him and we can go back to sincerely enjoying his work. Maybe

I don't hate him. In fact, a day or so ago, I started the following thread to talk about his dreamy eyes: >>7338155

Average Joe reads Stephen King. College student hipster reads DFW.

> Functional illiteracy in North America is epidemic. There are 7 million illiterate Americans. Another 27 million are unable to read well enough to complete a job application, and 30 million can't read a simple sentence. There are some 50 million who read at fourth or fifth grade level. Nearly a third of the nation's population is illiterate or barely literate--a figure that is growing by more than 2 million a year.

> A third of high-school graduates never read another book for the rest of their lives, and neither do 42 percent of college graduates.

> In 2007, 80 percent of the families in the United States did not buy or read a book.

My definition of what an "average joe" actually constitutes greatly differs from yours.

Accurate. Circle-jerky enough that everyone starts to hate the idea, but when you look at the content itself, actually pretty great.

The opinions expressed on 4chan are always opposite reactions to popular opinions, wherever they may be perceived. This is the effect of anonymity: people tend to post in hopes of receiving a reaction rather than actually expressing themselves.
