Uh, that's the Macquarrie and Robinson translation of Being and Time. As in, Edward Robinson. Wouldn't that be the same translation that you have? That's the standard English edition of Being and Time. I've heard that the Stambaugh one is more accessible. but it'll surely be some time before Macquarrie and Robinson's reign ends.

Planet Hulk is one of my favorite graphic novels, and probably my favorite capeshit one. I got that when I was younger, then went out and read a bunch more Hulk stuff, but it was all shit compared to Planet Hulk. I'd recommend it.

Does anyone else not keep their books? I used to be into collecting, but it seems to me now that it's kind of pointless. I trade books I've finished in to a used bookstore, and buy or borrow a copy if I want to reread something, which is rare.

It doesn't really provide any benefit to keep a collection, and occupies space, while selling old books recoups some money for future purchases. In the long term, a habit of buying but never selling books results in a large mass of objects that must be stored, kept clean, and organized, as well as packed and transported should you move. The benefit of this is that you have a personal library available to reread. However, there's so much written work available that there's no reason to reread something except for sentimental value once a book has been fully absorbed, and should you choose to do so you could easily purchase or borrow another copy.

I'll agree with you there, but at some point you must move on.
>implying you don't need non-fiction at hand for information or citations
How does that justify maintaining a large personal collection of books you will likely never have time to reread?
>implying you can remember everything
The books on my shelf won't help me with that once I'm dead. What do I need to remember these things for?
>implying you don't just want to reread chapter or a passage
I don't.

They do, if one habitually holds on to them.

What is this fascination with book shelves? Accruing printed material doesn't suggest you've read any of it, and doesn't impress guests, unless your friends are the kind of bohemian Jizz stains, who like yourself, advertise this sort of thing. Regardless, interlibrary loaning costs $2 per at my local library, and I can buy the books I would be loaning for only a little more than that. Plus, I get to keep my notes in them this way, which is more useful than files and folders for teaching directly from the book.

Philosobro, I always praise your Kierkegaard collection, but just noticed you have Machiavelli's Discourses on Livy. Have you read them, and if so what did you think? (Also what publisher is that?) I stumbled on them as I was wrapping up Livy's last extant books, and started reading the discourses last week, but I have no prior experience with political philosophy. I'm about halfway through and am enjoying it, but see that it's less of a how-to guide and more of a series of potential models to be added to one's "arsenal," so to speak.

PS have you read Mansfield's text on Machiavelli's Discourses? It looks like it may be interesting, but I'm not sure if it's worth the time until I have a better background in political philosophy, not to mention Machiavelli's own historical context.

Don't focus on the publisher. Just go for the content. Most of my design books come from small independent publishers.

Taschen does have good stuff (Philip Jodidio is usually excellent) but you will pay for that (100+ range) not to say that they don't have good cheap books, they are just less common.

Könemann is usually pretty darn solid. And there's one I'm forgetting now.

I've only read sections from the Discourses so far. From what I gather, it's largely about the value of political learning that can be gained by studying history. If you haven't read any political philosophy, I'd highly advise you read The Prince first and see if it can be reconciled with the Discourses.

That edition is the Mansfield translation, from the University of Chicago.

I assume you're referring to Mansfield's work, Machiavelli's Virtue? No, I have not read it. I want to read Thoughts on Machiavelli before reading any other secondary works on Machiavelli.

They're mass produced paperbacks, not the original manuscript of the book of revelations.

I had a copy of The Count of Monte Cristo. I read it, it was in almost perfect condition aside from creases down the spine. I lent it to a friend and he returned it with the corners all fucked up, the spine was obliterated and the cover was scratched. Straight back on my shelf. I don't give a fuck.

No. I'm saying that there is nothing sacred about books which are shipped on pallets by the lorry-load. I look after my property as best I can, but if I accidentally tear a page or fuck up the cover I don't get mad and buy a new one. If I had a Folio Society book and spilt coffee on the cover I'd be upset but since I don't buy that shit I have no reason to care about that kind of thing.

Nigger saying there is 'nothing sacred about books shipped on pallets by the lorry-load' is way too categorical and denies books of any esoteric value, and even paperbacks can be nice and relatively expensive unless you're a normalfag, AND this all this is smug depreciation of the arts, and so philistinism.

I remember enjoying it at 15. re: Wicca, it's complicated. Rationally I'm an atheist and wavering existentialist. Irrationally, I'm diagnosed as schizotypal and psychotic. My brain can get kind of disorganized, and so I was wondering if reading systematized irrationality might help organize my brain when it gets that way, even if it's only along unsound lines. Pure random noise is a lot more disruptive and harder to compartmentalize than eccentric belief.

What do you niggas do for heavy books that always fall over? Bookends just barely keep them in place until you need to pull a book off the shelf. Only solutions I can think of are to not place them all on one shelf or to use a few more bookends to put between the books.

You're on to something anon. I think you should direct that part of you mind to comparative mythology. Joseph Campbell is an obvious place to start. If you want to try to get a deeper handle on this Jung might possibly help you.
