ITT we discuss paintings and books related.

The Birth of Venus, one of the most recognized paintings by Botticelli, depicts Venus, the goddess of love, born out of a seashell, a fully mature woman. It is worthy to note that in classical times, the seashell was the symbol for the female genitalia, and as such, Botticelli was artfully referencing the goddess’s actual birth. Although a mythical figure, there is no exact literary context depicting the scene painted by Botticelli, leading to much speculation. As to its commission, the painting was solicited by a member of the Medici family, which is thought wanted to have a reproduction of an earlier work by a different artist, which had been lost after the rule of Nero.

>tfw find it hard to connect with visual art

Maybe it's because there's little imagination involved?

I can be awed by art and find it amazing, but it doesn't really make me feel too much like music and literature does.

Honestly, I'm kind of in love with this painting right now, mostly due to Aby Warburg's obsession with the nymph figures in it.

I can't stress how good Didi-Hubermann's book about him is, y'all niggas with even a passing interest on visual art should drop that Gombrich bs and get aquainted with my man Aby.

Also, he was /lit/ as fuck, his library was on the 65k volumes (all read) when he died, and he prefered to stay at his home studying and travelling with his qtpt painter wife than become heir to one of the biggest banks in Europe.

Basquiat was quite incredible.
Interestingly, this work is called "Portrait of The Artist as A Young Derilict", and it seems like Basquiat quotes Joyce's division of life into 3 phases.
