You can't pay to be smarter but you can definitely pay to be led so far down the correct path that >99% of the population has no hope of getting to you.

As in, not private school?

It's a fee-paying school that, when it was founded, was also set up as a charity to let members of the general public have the opportunity to attain education.

Eton, harrow, Winchester, etc. Are the big three prestigious public schools with up to 40 grand a year in fees.

I went to a grammar school which was older than dulwich (founded in 1551) but was not a fee paying school and only admitted on high test scores. Grammar schools are not as prestigious as public schools and the government seems to hate them for some reason.

Interesting.
Though paying that much for a fundamental education with a couple tacked on extracurriculars doesn't seem terribly intelligent.

Well you obviously don't understand how British society works.

You get contacts that are pretty much invaluable.

And you underestimate the freedom that public schools have in terms of choosing their own curriculum.

State comps pretty much totally neglect historical education to such an extent that public school boys are the only members of the populace that aren't almost entirely histrionically ignorant.
Public schools are the only schools that teach classical history and languages. There are many benefits to having been educated at an old school

>> No.7272096

>>7272083
Yes, but paying 40 grand a year for school in the age of the internet still doesn't seem like a great decision.
You're basically paying for the social circle, which I can understand, but it's not about the access to knowledge.

Eh? Are you missing the fact that these schools are for children and teens? You're not paying to acquire knowledge, you're paying to mould your child's whole personality so that they becomea Latin-speaking, card-carrying, pig-fucking member of the Britbong elite.

Or would you just give a ten-year old child a computer and tell them to google up an education?

>> No.7272161

>>7272158
Given that these days kids almost can't even google shit they want to know by themselves I'd say that would be a worthwhile investment.

The language part is probably fundamental, but it will rust in time if you don't pursue a related career (I know this is /lit/ but not everyone here reads and majors in English).

>the history of western philosophy and the entire canon
Sure, you saved a lot of time, and supposedly have the distilled knowledge of a carefully planned course, instructed by motivated smart people.
But can those teachings, esp. philosophy and literature, be fully appreciated by a teenager who probably hasn't experienced the mundanely suburban? Will he re-read and study what he learned as a youth?

As a matter of fact, I went to such a school (I won't bother in detailing the education system here) and am friends with plenty of guys with top grades from other schools. Even the best public school in the country for non-STEM majors (similar to Britland) and I found that most of them, especially those less inclined to the arts, to be pretty unoriginal, too respectful of their education or too indolent/ironic to put it to use. They are usually good problem solvers and make great lawyers, something largely useful for the 'system'.

It's something I can tell on my own character btw (I'm almost a wizard by 4chan standards).

>the entire canon
yeah right
