I'm a much more flexible and humane person since I left the church. I've found that trying to live in a way that accounts for the vagaries of my own mind and of other people is far more satisfying than puzzling over Jewish laws that Jews have long-since discarded because they're smart. Sometimes I wish humanity could all take this journey with me, but at others I'm glad the church is there to keep the lower classes from acting like total animals.

You would probably live similarly either way. Being obedient for the sake of salvation isn't much different than being obedient for the sake of a comfortable life.

I just don't get it.

If the reason I don't steal is because I believe in Karma or an Afterlife, I have to try to be good at all times and never steal unless absolutely necessary.

If the reason I don't steal is because I don't want to get caught, then it seems like I would just pocket everything that isn't nailed down.
