He turned from the sight of human ignorance and human fate and the sea eating the ground we stand on, which, had he been able to contemplate it fixedly might have lead to something; and found consolation in trifles so slight compared with the august theme just now before him that he was disposed to slur that comfort over, to deprecate it, as if to be caught happy in a world of misery was for an honest man the most despicable of crimes.

Would not we shatter it to bits -- and then
Re-mould it nearer to the Heart's Desire!

Book one will always be the best for me because Lisbeth and Blomkvist had a cool thing going. Books 2 and 3 would have made a great interlude for their eventually resumed partnership (professional and romantic), but they fucking sucked as a conclusion.

I will forever feel robbed of the rest of their story, but have to admit that, however painful it may be, those closing lines are beautiful and will allow us to imagine their story forever.

That just sounds overly melodramatic to me. It's a valid point, but could be made in a way shorter and easier statement.

Easy pleasures come cheap.

>He would fall. He had not yet fallen but he would fall silently, in an instant. Not to fall was too hard, too hard; and he felt the silent lapse of his soul, as it would be at some instant to come, falling, falling, but not yet fallen, still unfallen, but about to fall.

Nothing beats Joyce when Joyce wasn't being a pretentious cunt and hiding his talent in convoluted gibberish.
