Is there anything preachier and more holy than though than dystopia fiction? I don't think so. The only thing worse than the genre is the fans.

>work at publishing company
>girl adds me on instagram
>her bio, word-for-word, reads 'working on my YA dystopian novel :)'
>her pictures are things like Beckett and Fitzgerald

i don't understand. why read literary fiction but write pandering garbage?

People like to imagine a world more horrible than this one

I like that book a lot. However I don't think we're even remotely close to what was described in the book. People tend to go overboard with the comparisons because it's a book that most people have read and are influenced by (because of how accessible it is).

Anyway, before I get insulted and bashed in this thread for saying that I liked the book, I want you to know that I haven't read many dystopian novels and therefore would love if I could be recommended some that are considered better than 1984.

people want to be smart but they have no clue how so they settle with sucking up whatever popular college books they can instead.

The only thing dystopian about the future is how obessed with pop culture everyone is. Like sometimes I feel like it is treading on parody the way people obessively follow mass media. Like Fahrenheight 451 (pleb reference I know) levels of obession in regards to the celebrity worship. Also, everyone has like this anti-intellectual ironic attitude. It's hard to explain but it is post-modern as fuck and I hate it. It's like cynicism, gleeful ignorance, narcissism, decadent and materialistic while ALSO (and paradoxically) completely aware of it. It's hard to explain.

That and drones. Drones actually really scare me but I know nobody will do anything to prevent them from being used widespread across the world. They are really fucking scary

But really those two things arent REALLY dystopian. I agree that everyone loves to say they live in a dystopian era.

People have been copying and making cheap knock offs of popular things since the beginning of time. This isnt the first time and as long as two people live it certainly won't be the last

Also fuck Young Adult fiction. Am tired of seeing this shit everywhere. My roommates, 23 year old men, read the fucking hunger games

There have been real life totalitarian states which strike me as pretty dystopian, especially ones founded on utopian principles like marxism and fascism.

Living under Stalin would be pretty scary, if you didn't die from starvation first that is
