It seemed like some Robinson Crusoe shit, can anyone confirm? I have a penchant for books where the main character sits around and builds a base and tames animals and just survives on their own.

Wait, is minecraft a 400 year old genre?

>> No.7179368

It's an alright book. I think a lot of the humor falls flat on it's face, but it's meant to appeal to a facebook style poster audience.

But why is reddit bad

>> No.7179464

I thought the book was a bit crap. The plot was weak, it had literal Reddit speak in it, and it felt a bit like the writer just wanted to show off what he'd learnt about engineering. I made it 1/4 of the way in and gave up.

Novels aren't like films. There is lots of superb sci-fi, no point in wasting time on average sci-fi. But I could see it making quite a good film and Ridley Scott would be in his element.

It's more popular than 4chan that's the essential reason. It also explains the disproportionate amount of talk 4chan has about reddit vs the other way around.

Because with a bad book you don't have to worry about adapting faithfully, you just have to make it good.

I will never understand website pride. Reddit doesn't seem bad to me. I just go on here because the bar is a lot lower.

>> No.7179874

>>7179829
The bar is lower, but in a different way. 4chan users have a lower expectation of content quality from their fellow posters, but a higher expectation of each other's taste.

I haven't read The Martian yet (I downloaded a pdf to read before I go see the movie) but my expectation of it is that it will be sloppily written, poorly edited, linguistically cliched, and full of unfunny non-humor like some nerd ass going "Time to SCIENCE my way out of this problem!" In other words, like >>7179423 said, extremely Reddit.

>> No.7179971

>>7179874
I have no expectations, but I think anyone who uses Reddit as an insult is probably a lame, uncreative person. And they probably use Reddit.

I've read the book. It's not bad, although it definitely has some of that "omg so random" humor. It's not greatly or poorly written, but it's not exactly the type of book you read for anything but the story. If you go in with high expectations, you'll be let down, which is what you deserve. I didn't love it and there are a thousand books I'd sooner recommend, but I did enjoy reading it.

>> No.7180013

>>7179971
I do use Reddit very occasionally for what it's worth, and like I said, I'm going to read the book, though I'm going into it with sub-basement level expectations.

I also think that associating something with the negative qualities of Reddit is a totally sensible way to sum up how you feel about it. In the same way you might dismiss Sam Hyde as "4chan", which is more or less correct even if both Hyde and the chan are good for somethings and pretty funny at times.

I don't think I could take anyone here seriously if they tried to criticize someone else's sense of humor.

>> No.7180372

Fight Club is only good for the first half hour, after that it turns into trash.

>> No.7180428

I really liked how optimistic it was and how enthusiastic the author seemed to be about the subject, but it does feel pretty amateurish as a novel. I can't hate on it too much though, there's clearly a lot of thought gone into how someone could survive under these conditions, and I'm not going to begrudge the author his success, he put a lot of thought into a story he was initially writing for free. I imagine it will work better as a film anyway.

Reading it I actually thought it would make a great movie.

It's really more of a script or scenario than a novel - that is, there's nothing very literary about it. But plot-wise it's fun. The humor is bad but probably realistically bad for a scientist.

Read it two days ago (in two days). It reminds me a lot of Leonardo da Vinci's "The Code" -- easy to read and addictive up to 75% of it, your standard characters with absolutely no deviations, no innovations, nothing. You won't learn shit from it, but it's a great time killer.

7/10.

I used reddit before I switched to 4chan, so I can give you criticism of it that wasn't informed by '>reddit' posting on 4chan

To preface:
- Some subreddits are alright, usually only the ones with enough membership for new material but not enough for a circlejerk to develop

- most of 4chan is utter shit as well, but I've never seen any comment chain on reddit that rivals what is discussed on /lit/,
>implying /lit/ is sophisticated
most of it isn't, it has its moments

The majority of the userbase seem to be self depreciating introverts, and all the cultural baggage that comes with this, it also has a major liberal streak running through it, and the most developed philosophy is 'hurt people bad, help people good'. It's essentially just a round table of pats on the back and who can find the best meme or pun to reply to this comment

I read the book. Its awfully written even though the premise is cool. If you've actually read books after high school because you enjoy them you'll find The Martian written in an extremely robotic way that completely lacks literary beauty.

The prose is just mechanical in its simplicity, the jokes are pretty tryhard, there's a lot of unnecessary characters and drama that feels like its been manufactured in a Chinese sweat shop.

There's this brief romance set up amongst two team members for example and its *completely* pointless and devoid of any emotion.

Its like the book was written to become a Hollywood movie from the get go.

The sad bit is, the concept is cool and the execution could have been stellar. However the book is just not a good read at all. Kudos to the author for making it free on his site at one point though and for seeming like a genuine person regarding the science-y stuff in his book (even though I don't think he did a good job writing it)

The book had interesting ideas and set pieces, but mediocre writing and terrible characters. So it works better as a movie for the most part. Unless you really like near-future sci-fi descriptions of mars colonies.

Robinson Crusoe in space nigga. I know what you are talking about RC was my favorite shit as a kid and this book is one of my top 10 at this point. Don't expect any revolutionary style in writing or anything. It was written by a guy that does orbital math on his free time. But the story is pretty cool mostly because it is not sci-fi if you will. This could for the most part actually happen in the near future.
