7120006 No.7120006 [Reply] [Original]

About a year ago, there had been a couple of great art threads here. They were pretty popular and a simple but effective way of introducing people to great art.

Anyway, I recently lost all the files I had on my computer, including a huge collection of art I had saved up, partly thanks to those threads. I'd like to get some of that back, and maybe discover some new greats.

This painting here by based Kramskoi was the first one I shared back then (in a batch of his and Repin's pics) and I remember a few people liking it. To this day I still see it pop up every now and then in random threads, which tells me it has caught on.

So, share away.

Another one by Kramskoi. Someone once told me this was the cover of their Anna Karenina.

These threads were huge then, and people seemed to dig them.

But yeah, I wouldn't want this to get deleted, so here's an interesting tidbit:
I discovered Kramskoi by reading The Brothers Karamazov. At one point, one of the characters talks about a painting of his, so I decided to look it up. Pic related.

Didn't like it very much, but I looked up his other stuff and enjoyed it immensely. You gotta understand, or at least appreciate other forms of art in order to become a great writer.

Further in the distance is a tiny steam-powered boat, perhaps a suggestion that the back-breaking labor of the barge haulers is no longer necessary in the industrial age. Yeah, I didn't understand it, it caught my eye because it is so different than Gerome's other stuff.
It seem to be an insult directed at Muslims. I would say that it is implying that through Allah's eyes, killing a pig (presumably to eat) is worse than killing hundreds of people. A black-winged angel has to lift one side of the scale to force it into fitting God's logic. But then, from the Quran,

>The weighing on that day is the true (weighing). As for those whose scale is heavy, they are the successful. And as for those whose scale is light: those are they who lose their souls because they disbelieved Our revelations.

flips everything around. Maybe Gerome thought it was the opposite. I don't know.

Isn't that kind of expressed in the image, though? The women seem untouchable, incapable of suffering. It's not like they're in solidarity with the men in the picture. The men are the victims, and the women are the perpetrators. It honestly seems like a poetic rendering of the board's whole victimhood complex.

So the board of nogf can never make a piece of art featuring a woman?

Or if they could, what would the art be like? Not trying any rhetorical tricks, actually want to know. Are there really supposed to be no women at all?

If you try to serve you're labeled a buck teeth idiocracy walmart employee, if you go to college for non STEM you're labeled a buck teeth idiocracy walmart employee. If you try to get a blue collar job instead you're labeled a buck teeth idiocracy walmart employee. If you fart too loud as an American you're labeled a buck teeth idiocracy walmart employee. American just hate themselves tbh fam.

Grandiose visions of crossing deluges and fighting on the battlements of castles are replaced with kids jerking off to the zombie apocalypse and adults actually preparing for it. Meanwhile nonwhites simply see themselves as a separate entity altogether who's job it is to usurp the glory and jeer at the vitality as oppressive, it's just vultures and cancer now with a few death heaves. A "new America" as Rihanna put it.

You can really imagine his pain and solitude. No other depiction of Christ made me feel this way. They are always so grandiose or bathed in religious symbolism, which is fine, but it always seems so detached from reality and I am left unable to connect with the painting. They say he was God and man at the same time, but this human dimension is often completely left out or at least diminished, which is a shame, since it is closest to us.
