Clouds parodies the ancient Greek superstitious myth that the "gods" lived in the "clouds".

Supporting statements:
>Greek gods are often depicted living in clouds (groups of condensed water in the upper atmosphere)
>The title of the play is "Clouds"
>The events of the play mirror those believed to have been undertaken in the "clouds" of Greek mythology

The Clouds is Aristophanes' response to Socrates. His demonstrating the limits of Socrates' "pre-Socratic" or natural scientific inquiry is what caused Socrates to embark on his "second sailing" in pursuit of the truth. It was because of Aristophanes that Socrates "brought philosophy down from the heavens and into the cities of men."

Thesis: The traditional gods were not just important as pre-scientific explanations about the world, but were also considered the source of authority for the laws and customs of the Greek polis.

Supporting statements:
1) The teachings of the "thinkery" about the gods are treated as a subject verboten to discuss with outsiders (though both Socrates and his students blab about them), suggesting that the subject is not just considered a "mystery teaching", but one with certain political consequences.

2) The "wisdom" that Pheidippides comes away from the "thinkery" amounts to respect only for wisdom or for those who might have it having true authority, the gods having been reduced to clouds (Socratic "forms" HINT HINT).

3) The end of the play culminates in either Strepsiades or Hermes (in some manuscripts it's Hermes who suddenly appears and speaks before the Chorus' final words) demanding that Socrates and his students be pursued because "most of all since I know that they were doing injustice to the gods."
