According to the news the book has been banned because it's targeted toward a young adult readership and contains instances of young adults having sex and doing drugs.

The 'ban' is to the extent that copies are being recalled and sales of the novel disallowed. I wonder what the penalty would be for selling it.

Considering the public outcry I don't see the 'ban' lasting long.

It may not be called a ban officially, but a ban is what it is - it's not allowed to be sold here or rented in libraries, and if you search for it on sites like Kobo using an NZ IP address, it doesn't show up any more. The best way to get people to read something is to ban it. I have no doubt this will increase the sales of the book, probably by a huge margin. I, for instance, never heard of it and don't care one bit about a degenerate Maori boy's sex life and drug use, but now I want to read it. Well done, New Zealand!
