I don't see how one can justify the banning or censoring of something like a book.
All it says is that the authorities don't trust their people to read it and make the correct value judgments, which inherently puts them at odds.

According to the news the book has been banned because it's targeted toward a young adult readership and contains instances of young adults having sex and doing drugs.

The 'ban' is to the extent that copies are being recalled and sales of the novel disallowed. I wonder what the penalty would be for selling it.

Considering the public outcry I don't see the 'ban' lasting long.

It may not be called a ban officially, but a ban is what it is - it's not allowed to be sold here or rented in libraries, and if you search for it on sites like Kobo using an NZ IP address, it doesn't show up any more. Before this, I didn't even know it was still possible to completely ban a book in a supposed 'first world' country. What a fucking disgrace.

>>7086647
>I wonder what the penalty would be for selling it.

See this link: http://www.booksellers.co.nz/book-news/river-banned-sale-nz
>The fine for distributing Into the River while it is banned, without knowledge of the ban, is $3,000 for an individual, and $10,000 for a business. If it is distributed while it is banned, with knowledge of the ban, is $10,000 or up to 3 months in prison for an individual, and $25,000 for a business.

The best way to get people to read something is to ban it. I have no doubt this will increase the sales of the book, probably by a huge margin. I, for instance, never heard of it and don't care one bit about a degenerate Maori boy's sex life and drug use, but now I want to read it. Well done, New Zealand!

>> No.7088517

>I have taught in secondary schools for the past forty years. Much of this time has been spent encouraging boys to read. Part of the challenge was to find books that “spoke” to them. This meant books about issues that were relevant to them and written in a style that was authentic

I'm not conservative but I'm glad this book has been banned. I'm fed up with books deliberately lowering the quality to somehow lead “boys” to greater literature. This won't happen. They are led to a similar, cheap, poorly written material.
