No because I have values beyond capital gain and I'm an atheist

>> No.7080322

where do you derive your values from? what are they? christian values seem dependent on being 'neighbourly', impressing others with your morals, etc which seems pretty fedora to me.

That's just calvinists/puritans.
There's actually a bible passage warning against holiness signaling.
I forget which one, but it's basically like "Look at all these faggots playing up their suffering publicly while fasting. Don't do that. Cover up all symptoms of suffering for the sake of humility."

>Grow up reading The Bible in several versions
>memorize in their entirety the Childrens', Shorter, Longer and Westminster Catechisms for good boy points
>Learn Latin by middle school so I can read the vulgate
>Read theology and apologetics starting in elementary school
>attend a Christian school where we study this stuff in class
>Regularly dialogue with the pastors of two Presbyterian churches about theology.
>teach sermons at school, sunday school and youth group
Then I make the extremely psychically and socially painful decision that it's all just an outdated coping mechanism, and I get called a fedora by some casual who decided he didn't like the look of Dawkins' face.

If only anyone else knew that my pastor has been having a continuous crisis of faith for two years over something I said the last time we went out for breakfast together.

Oh man, I'm trying to remember the exact wording that makes it so rough, but basically questioned the efficacy/existence of the Holy Spirit given the fractured nature of The Church and that he needed to either consider most other denominations not necessarily heretical but alienated from the Holy Spirit, since all believers are possessed by The Spirit and this allows them to identify each other (this point about identifying Christians with ease b/c of the spirit is also part of the case since he admitted he couldn't ID other believers without intensive questioning like the kind you get from the board of elders when you join the church).

My other case was that the extreme disagreements between scholars on Christian ethics/morality should call into question the usefulness of The Law and again call into question the salvation status of most of those involved in those disagreements, i.e. most Christians. He wasn't prepared to consider everyone disagreed with him on ethical positions to be unsaved, so he was stuck having to question his own salvation.

If there's anything you'd like clarified, I'm happy to comply. It doesn't negate everything about Christianity, but it's a pretty serious crisis for most Christians to give up the idea of The Spirit's guidance.

I don't need anything clarified, but it strikes me as sectarian hairsplitting more than anything else. Are most Christians so big on the idea of their specific denomination being the One True Church?

No, that's the point. They should be because they all profess to be guided by the Holy Spirit. When a church splits, at least one group believes that they are being guided by the Holy Spirit in going their own way, and only one can be right. It's a pretty big deal that this is so common and the Christians handwave it as "sectarian hairsplitting." The pastor's position had been that they were wrong about unimportant stuff, but if you believe the spirit guides this sort of thing then that's not consistent.

Fringe beliefs and their charlatans aren't really a good counter. For example David Koresh is the son of God and had legitimate followers.
