If you're to believe the evolutionary theory then life does only exist as a protective shell for DNA and to allow its replication and nothing more/ That art exists at all suggests either a reproductive advantage to art, or some element exempt from the DNA protection function. If an element is exempt from it then we cannot say that sex is the only motivator, and we cannot with confidence say that it is the most important thing.

Basically, figuring out why humans create art could be a way to the answer to this question.
