I started with the greeks.
>read history of philosophy (bryan Magee) as a prereq,
>"Mama Mia, spicy meatball, gotta have more"
>crack open the illiad cuz the mythology book is taken at my library
>mfw when the intro tells me the whole plot of the trojan war and the iliad
>mfw I'm supposed to suffer through homer so I can understand philosophy
>mfw I don't actually care about the greeks and homers prose aside from the relevance to philosophy.

bros I already know the characters, can't I just read plato and aristotle already?

Also, what would you say is your favorite branch of phiosophy?

Don't ever do what /lit/ tells you. Must important of all: don't bother reading Pynchon or DFW.

This one disappointment you've met with while following meme advices is pretty much characteristic of any future result you will get if you listen to /lit/-any board on 4chan, even-about any topic.

the point is not to begin with the greeks, but to finish by them

How do you not know the plot of the Iliad before reading it? Are you literally uneducated?

Homer is not essential for studying philosophy, but it's damn useful to elucidate you on the mindset of the Greeks, as well as being a bloody good read in of itself.
The two works you should really start with are "The Pre-Socratic Philosophers" and Hessiod's Theogeny. After that, the three main dialogues - Euthyphro, Republic and Phaedo. from there, Aristotle, principally Physics, Politics and Nicomachean Ethics.
