I don't use reddit and I'm wondering if/why r/books is as bad as people say.

It is. r/literature isn't so bad. r/askliterarystudies is pretty good.

>> No.7032985

No, it's just different. It's not bad, it's for people who want to discuss The Martian or children's lit.

It's launched as an insult on here because it's a no-bully zone, but the saving grace of /lit/ is kind of the bullying. On reddit people won't discuss philosophy, theology, classical texts and literature because they don't have a vested interest and the majority of people like autobiographies written by '60s rockers and comedians.

It's different strokes, it's just usually someone who might fit better on r/books gets offended that they are being bullied, when in reality they are probably just on a board that doesn't suit them properly.

Because if you voice an opinion that people disagree with your post gets downvoted into the abyss and nobody sees it. It's not conducive to discussion, and the site is only useful for news and porn, although I don't even use it for news.

Go on the front page right now and have a look. There's The Martian, GRRM, a thread doing the old 'Holden sux' meme, multiple Bradbury threads, Hugo drama, and to top it all off, a popular thread called 'Do We Mistake Inaccessibility for Brilliance?' which I can guess without even looking will be pure plebbery.

/lit/ is usually intolerant of fedora-tier atheist platitudes, as one would hope a literature forum has some appreciation for the positive effects of religion on the western cultural zeitgeist.
That said, the whole Christposting thing is just bait for fedora-tippers. I've seen strawpolls showing around half of users are atheist, by far the largest demographic.

In my opinion there's nothing wrong with that. My friends have gone back and forth on calling me a racist because of the way that I think and the way that I talk in contrast to the way that I act. I do hold that predominantly certain groups act certain ways, but I don't let that stop me from being polite/getting to know someone from that group. I'm not some braindead skinhead just going around yelling "lynch all niggers" or some shit, but I do have some pretty right leaning views on topics.

r/books is for people who read books in general, not literary fiction. Books that are not literary fiction are often read for the same reason people watch T.V shows: to vegetate after a hard day, to laugh a little bit, to feel some suspense and release, to look at sexy people doing sexy things, etc, and, in short, none of the reasons people come to art: to be challenged, to experience the heights of a medium, to have their minds and heart expanded, etc. People don't mind a LITTLE of that, but it's not their primary reason. Most people on r/books aren't going to be trying to read Ulysses. The best among them were people who might have been good readers once but who kept reading for a rough sort of satisfaction.

Evidence to the point: on the front page right now: Neil Gaiman, R.A Salvatore, Stieg Larsson, plus a smattering of literary stuff.

I've had the same experience. The thing is, when you point out the problems that black people have as a culture as a non-black person, or even as one, you get called a racist. I mean, it is true that a lot of this is all an indirect effect of slavery in America and the subsequent softer forms of discrimination in our social institutions, but that doesn't mean Black Americans, aren't, as a group, pretty shit. We're supposed to be acknowledging this with one eye, through affirmative action, youth programs, etc, and through the other we're supposed to be blind to it, to say black Americans are great, hire them for their unique amazing perspective, promote their literature, etc. I hate to say doublethink, but.

Because everyone needs an antagonist.

If you are not 'Yugoslavian' born in or under the rule of Slobodan Milošević; if you are not Kosovonian; if you are not Serbian or Kenyan or Rwandan or North Korean (I have minor reservations here) or Iraqi or Kurdish or numerous other predominantly post-cold war states, then you lack an antagonist.

Lets be brutally clear -- one needs an antagonist. Whether it's a petty dispute over a newspaper with the next door neighbor, or a vile comment in the New York times, or a Field Marshall pointing a riffle at your child's temple. that one spends months crusading (and I use that term 'crusading' lightly) against, the human individual needs an antagonist to fight to justify the phantom pain of the amputated God.

In this particular instance the antagonist is reddit -- so lets "inter-subjectivity" rally against the fedora neckbeards once again and proclaim ourselves triumphant. That is the crux of it, right?

I think the reason why I hate all of the above so much including YouTube's is this:

Reddit UI makes new comments their own threads, with new replies on top of the replied post, and so forth and so on while indenting the comment. This gives the illusion of a more busy conversation but when you feed it 4chan style it's around the same content. It's the same principle as puffing up a chip bag to make it look like it has more chips.

Tumblr and YouTube's I can do in one go. Both are made with having to use a @ or + with the comment. Unlike 4chan which you can just put your mouse over the red numbers to see what post you're replying too, you can't really be that exact for Tumblr/YouTube conversations. It also makes it more annoying for those reading the conversation if the posters aren't talking directly at each other or when they talk over each other.

Now /Tumbr/

Echo chamber/10

Out of all the ones listed, they at least encourage typing out your words and more importantly, REPLYING to those posts.

Tumblr copy pastas everything to the point where it's like a system of telephone. There is barely a conversation, you can comment. But the way it's made is more for spreading a post rather than being able to talk to others. Instead, you are talking past each other.

its like watching porn. I'm sure most people would "enjoy" watching porn. You enjoy it in the moment, but you there's no real payoff and afterwards, the image of yourself jerking your dick to pixels seems kind of stupid.

if your kid spends all his time watching cartoons, you'd probably want him to do something else. "go outside and play for a bit"

a grown man "watching cartoons of cute girls doing cute things" might seem kind of silly too.
