other than the bible, is there any apocalyptic literature remotely comparable to evangelion?

Nothing compares to how SHIT Evangelion is

Serial Experiments Lain is a genuinely great work despite being an animu.

Sage for not literature.

i like how whenever someone says evangelion is shit they fail to provide a reason as to why

>Lain is great
>despite being animu

>implying something being anime automatically means its bound for low quality

This is how you identify posers

Evangelion was inspired by Space Runaway Ideon which was inspired by Forbidden Planet and Childhood's End.

So maybe Childhood's End.

It's basically pseudo-philosophical. It's an entertaining enough show but it doesn't actually contain any deeper meaning.

It was a joke.
I actually really liked Evangelion.
A lot of people complain about the biblical symbols and what not having no real meaning, but I think that actually worked in the shows favor. The evas are godly, beyond humanitys control and understanding. So the meaningless symbolism ultimately works. It makes them mysterious, as they should be.

Anime is a business first and foremost, which is why it's considered pleb. It's very difficult for a director to push anything risky because it could tank the whole studio if it fails. Thus it's rare to see works that push the boundaries of what animation is capable of, or deviate from the archetypes and patterns that sell.

Literature doesn't have that problem. It's incredibly cheap to print words, so if a book fails it's not like it'll tank the publisher. And even then there's still digital publishing, which is almost free.

Anno wanted to tell his fanbase to go outside and become well adjusted so that they wouldn't turn into him. His failure still torments him to this day.

Gunbuster was prettier and Royal Space Force made its point better but EVA is still great stuff. Anno gets a bit too much shit sometimes, he's got a good eye for directing and is very self-aware and worldly which is a good and rare thing in anime right now.

It's not SEELE's philosophical ramblings about nothingness that make people consider it 'deep'.
