I wouldn't call him edgy. I just grew tired of him building up a story to fucking end it at nowhere. Not to mention his action description is horrible.

He had a few good stories though.

Hemingway is the original sincerity. He's very emotionally open and vulnerable in his writing. I've been to war, hunted in Africa and seen a bullfight, so it's not like the stuff he writes about is bullshit.

There was nothing edgy about Lovecraft when he was doing his writing. If anything, he was stuffy and conservative.

Everybody hated blacks and foreigners back then. Half the country lived under legally enforced racial segregation, and businesses even in "progressive" Northern cities refused to hire immigrants. Lovecraft's hate was mild by comparison to the world around him.

Not the poster you're replying to, but you are correct. His racism was worse than most of the people in his own social circles, especially. That said, it would not likely have been looked at by anyone as anything close to "edgy." It would have been looked at the same was his prose was - as old-fashioned. He was stuck in a mental space of wishing he'd lived a century earlier. He was also just a really screwed up guy who'd had a weird fucking life. Not edgy at all, really. Just kind of a racist, awkward dork, who wrote some really great spoopy stories along with a bunch of absolute trash.

From "The Call of Cthulhu"

>Examined at headquarters after a trip of intense strain and weariness, the prisoners all proved to be men of a very low, mixed-blooded, and mentally aberrant type. Most were seamen, and a sprinkling of Negroes and mulattoes, largely West Indians or Brava Portuguese from the Cape Verde Islands, gave a colouring of voodooism to the heterogeneous cult. But before many questions were asked, it became manifest that something far deeper and older than Negro fetishism was involved. Degraded and ignorant as they were, the creatures held with surprising consistency to the central idea of their loathsome faith.
