Read it at fifteen (impressionable age) but the writing struck me as extraordinary, like a wave hitting you in the sternum. The only comparable impression I've got from any other work of art is when I saw the Sistine Chapel in Rome. I'm not talking about style or idea, simply about the sheer power that radiates from the writing (or the painting).

As a novel I like it much, it's pretty much the right degree of romantic in a realistic setting. The "author talking" parts might seem cumbersome but they're an essential part of the project of the novel I'm afraid. I liked the informative parts and the religious musings.
