I'm looking for some good /lit/ in the German language that won't break my balls, me being a non-native speaker of German.

Going straight for the obvious, Kafka's language is fairly simple, though he makes (it seems to me) odd or uncommon choices of words sometimes.

Should I just start with Die Verwandlung?

I read Der Steppenwolf but I feel like I would have got more out of it reading an English translation.

>> No.6982978

I'm wondering the same thing OP.

How much German do you know? I can read kids books pretty easily now, and I could follow what was happening in Die Verwandlung, but I think an English translation would have served me better since I was still not getting a sizable amount of what was happening.

I can read things like Wikipedia, the News (depending on jargon), and simple novels. I got a lot of comprehension from translations of Hemingway and Harry Potter. I struggle with German literary authors, I need to use a dictionary often and sometimes compare it to an English translation.

Using a dictionary and comparing to English translations is how you will improve

Take German YA/kids books

Christine Nöstlinger wrote a ton of books towards 12-16 year olds, I loved Wir Pfeifen Auf Den Gurkenkönig as a kid.

I'm personally a huge fan of Walter Moers' books in the Zamonien universe, they get more mature with every book, start with 13 1/2 Leben Des Kapitän Blaubär

Then there's the YA stuff you read in school - Die Wolke (about an nuclear catastrophe), Die Welle (a teacher re-enacts a kind of Hitler Youth in his history class to teach everyone involved a lesson), In 300 Jahren Vielleicht (set during the 30 Years War, very brutal and bleak, interesting choice to teach kids Mr. Teacher) etc.

Read Michael Ende's books, they're for young people - Neverending Story (Unendliche Geschichte), Momo are the two most famous ones.

There's a famous one about a witcher which they recently made a movie from, I can't remember the name of it. Might post later.

Remembered, it's Ottfried Preußler's Krabat

Don't go Kafka. Kafka's language may be simple, at least to a native with some education, but I think that especially his syntax will fuck you over.

Just go with Koeppen, if you want to read overrated shit, or, depending on how good your German is, Cornelia Funke. I loved her books in primary and lower middle school, and I imagine they'd still be somewhat enjoyable.

Prose: Hausmärchen, Heinrich Bölls short stories, Judith Hermanns short stories (if you'd like something contemporary), maybe Kafka
Poetry: Brecht (Buckower Elegien), Heine, Goethe, Des Knaben Wunderhorn
Plays: maybe Brecht

They all have pretty basic vocabulary and language, I feel.
