The materialism in historical materialism refers to the social relations amongst people relating to their material reproduction. Not that the world of objects is a metaphysical reality.

Biologist here. Many animal species do have territories kid. Just because they don't define and delineate their territories and don't sign treaties it doesn't mean they don't have territories.
