I've been eyeing this one for years, but I'm afraid I won't like it. My literary preferences are such that most of you would laugh and call me a pleb. Basically I read a lot of mainstream stuff, fluff that doesn't require too much thinking. Probably the most difficult book I've read this year has been The Man in the High Castle.

So with that said, is this something a lowly idiot like myself will find enjoyment in? Is it worth finding out for myself one way or the other?

Go for it, OP. If you're willing to take some quiet time every day for a bit, to relax, to open yourself up to the book, you'll have no problems enjoying this even if you are inexperienced with literary fiction.

Yeah you'll probably end up enjoying it. I read it my sophomore year of high school and I loved it.

Don't make this your first Steinbeck book.

Start with Of Mice and Men and then read this or Grapes of Wrath

Thanks all. I'll probably give it a shot next.

Steinbecks a great author don't listen to /lit/

hes no Pychon or Joyce but hes comfy af, I'd also reccomend some of his lesser known works such as The Moon is Down and The Wayward Bus

they're all comfy and the pages turn quick

Steinbeck is one of my favorites. Soaring high-flying mccarthy-esque shit sandwiched between folksy dialogue and chill prose.

it's not a book that will particularly challenge you, no real deviations of structure or really hard to understand sections (iirc, correct me if i'm wrong)
its just a really really enjoyable and comfy book
