But occasionally when it is the bible I read The Sermon on The Mount Matthew 5-7.

When it says "and darkness was upon the face of the deep. And the Spirit of God moved upon the face of the waters". What does this mean? When I look at a modern translation, it says it means "the earth was under an ocean, covered in darkness". So even before God made anything, there was an ocean there?

And God said, Let there be a firmament in the midst of the waters, and let it divide the waters from the waters. And God made the firmament, and divided the waters which were under the firmament from the waters which were above the firmament: and it was so.

The modern translation says that the firmament is a "dome" to separate the water below from the water above. But where is the water "above"? It's called sky, how is that considered water?
