In my second year of college, I wrote a paper on the Russo-Japanese war summarizing shadow intents in about 40 minutes because I memorized almost everything I needed. My friends said it took them about 3-4 hours and one girl from our class took a couple of days. Doesn't make me any better than them, better prepared maybe, but no further ahead and certainly not more talented.

Some people write fast and others write slow. Some conceptualize ideas more quickly, while others brood longer. At the end of it all, it doesn't matter.

That being said I wouldn't force my worst enemy to try to make sense of it -- mostly because it is a rebellion against things that make conclusive sense (like, say, most of the more dominant political ideologies at the time, which pretended to make sense, but ended up being trash).

Also, you make really good point regarding Dubliners, and OP is full of shit anyway, Joyce wrote most of the stories when he was around 22, this is true, but The Dead, the story that got him most of his early fame, took ten more years; Ulysses took 9; Portrait took 10.

There are many ways to interpret a piece of text, but if the reader did not realize the author's intended definition and could not differentiate between a possible nuance and the intended context, then I suppose it was the Author's fault.

Also, w/r/t the author's fault or no -- Joyce deliberately made it hard as hell to understand, just like with Ulysses, but crazier. Part of the joke was that the harder you tried to understand everything, the more the text left you behind. This is what he should've explained to people before his time was up, imo.
