So I just finished reading Siddhartha by Hesse and not sure what to say. This guy literally(lol) shat on everything Buddha has said. Siddhartha in this book says love for everything is the key while according to Gautama, love (desire) is root of all evil. What does /lit/ think?

>> No.6798195

well love != desire

plus hesse himself said he based the teachings more on chinese than on indian thought, the second part is taoist, towards life, towards not-learning/not-doing/not-knowing

what? the buddha doesn't say love is the cause of suffering. craving is, as in, craving for a condition apart from the one you are in right now. i didn't even like siddhartha that much but at least know what you're talking about if you're gonna criticize a major work

you seem like whiny douche but i'll destroy your nitpicking. A king asked the Buddha why he believed love led to suffering and despair. Buddha replied
"You majesty, your question is a very good one, and many people can benefit from it. There are many kinds of love. We should examine closely the nature of each kind of love. Life has a great need of the presence of love, but not the sort of love that is based on lust, passion, attachment, discrimination, and prejudice."

My copy came with footnotes criticizing the writing, like pointing out that a supposedly rare speech by the ferryman is preceded by a speech of similar length. It was like the footnote writer was trying to one-up Hesse and steal some of the spotlight. One of the more entertaining parts of the book.

Anyone got some good guides to Buddhist texts/Overviews of Buddhism? I'd like to learn eastern thought. Is the Oxford VSI (Very Short Introduction) on Buddhism any good?
