I Just finished this, and was really impressed. One of the best books i've read (which isn't many). I haven't read an entire book over 300 pages since I was in high school, so this was an accomplishment for me and got me back into reading.

I'm wondering where do i go from here? Should I keep reading this series, or try something similar or something completely different.

I read the gunslinger and thinking of continuing that series, but there's several other books i'm curious about also. Other's i'm curious about that get mentioned alot are Carcher in the Rye, The Road, Some other Stephan King, Dune or House of Leaves.

What should I read next? Leaning more forward Dark Tower of Songs of Ice and Fire. series.

Do you read all the books in a series after each other or do you read others in-between?

>> No.675717

I generally read series as a series. Especially with sprawling works like Martin's and King's, there's subtleties of plot and character development that I just won't remember. It's why I gave up on Robert Jordan years ago and have no desire to return to him, unlike Martin.

Dune is a bit of a chore, and kind of outdated. The Gunslinger is really good, but the rest of the Dark Tower series doesn't hold up.

I say continue with Song of Ice and Fire.

i've read quite a few of them - any other suggestions

any anti-hero stories?

I'd read the next three books, then go on to China Mieville's Perdido Street Station and The Scar. Ignore the third book in that series unless you like gay sex.

China Mieville's Perdido Street Station <3 that book it turned out so much better than what i expected

OP keep reading the series. It develops by leaps and bounds in the following books.

speaks the truth, Gunslinger is great, the next books are OK, book 4 is _rad_, and books 5 - 7 are some of the worst books you can buy ever forever.

I've been hearing about Songs of Ice and Fire from my friend and I think I'll start that soon.

Best stand-alone novel I've read in a while had to be 'Jonathan Strange and Mr. Norrell' by Susanna Clark. I give it my highest recommendation, for what it's worth from a random stranger on the internet. Pick it up if you're in the bookstore and not destitute.

Read the rest of the series'.

And in case I have to point it out to you, read them in order.

After that go where you will.

I would finish the series and then read the Belgariad series. It's the one series I can always come back to and enjoy no matter how often I read it.

1 is meh
2 is meh
3 is pretty cool
4 is dissapoint
5 could be better
6 finally got shit going
7 was okay till the end

The entire series as a whole is god tier. Individual books not so much.

Jesus when are we supposed to get A Dance With Dragons again?

Shit has taken forever.

Cut him some slack. Unlike most lazy authors he actually has a reason for taking so long.

Touring and shit?

No.

The wait isn't a huge problem, it's just I want him to put that shit out before he up and dies.

Feast and Dragons were originally supposed to be one book, but then it got too big so he had to split it up (which was why Feast took so long). He wrote much of Dragons before he split up the two, but then he decided to already rewrite much of it. Basically, by the time he will be done dragons (which is already longer than the rest of the books) he will have written the equivalent of four books in the writing of these two. Four VERY long books.

I loved Perdido Street Station and The Scar. I liked The Scar more though.

And I have to agree, I was very disappointed with Iron Council. So much gay sex in that book but that's not why it what was disappointing.

>Jonathan Strange and Mr. Norrell

This book took me by surprise and I fell in love with it. I sent it to my family and they've been passing it around. I think my grandma is reading it now.

if you enjoy epic historical fantasy read the Malazan series. the author was an archeologist, and it shows.

>> No.677652

I've never understood people who prefer the earlier Dark Tower books to the latter.

In terms of quality and enjoyment, they got better as the series progressed.

I'd say 4 > 5 > 7 > 6 > 3 > 1 > 2

Yes, there are times when some of his plot points are fucking retarded, but by the point that some of the more questionable things happen in the book, you're kind of already enveloped in the world and how things work and you can overlook most of it with a roll of your eyes.

I really enjoyed the dark tower from beginning to end. There are times when it felt hard to continue, but I persevered and am happy I did. The Dark Tower has some great characters, and you really grow to care about them.

To be fair the fate of Randal Flagg one of the best villains of modern literature was a travesty.

Then there's the Crimson King, built up in to many books (not just the Dark Tower series)....

EEEEEEEEEEEEEEE

I'll have to agree with you on that one. Worst climax in the history of fiction. Ever. No exceptions.

>> No.677697

>>677683

Yeah, I know. There were points in book 7 that were such massive letdowns. The fact that there was no epic showdown between Marten and Roland due to a fucking spider babby was infuriating. And The Crimson King being defeated by being erased from history was also enraging.

Those points aside, I thought that EEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE!

I don't entirely disagree, but by all means EEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE was pretty EEEEEEEEEEEEE but not as much as EEEEEEEEEEEEEE was when EEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE.
