What method of killing/execution lends itself to the most /lit/-worthy descriptions?

I say beheading, or possibly hanging.

Crucifixion instantly comes to mind, actually yes this is by far the most appropriate.

The others are too slow, whereas you could write a novel describing the thoughts of a man on a cross as he sits there for days before wasting away.

That's punishment, not execution

And it's the most cruel punishment, you're forced to stay "alive" in the collective memory only in order to be tortured forever

>TFW my ancient greek proff said Socrates had an unattainable physique

He was such a dumb cuck. Typical fat soft philosopher; the type anti-philosophers think about when they end their sentences with exclamation!

That image is so powerful it imposes a quality of inferiority on innumerable paintings and other attempts to produce the aesthetically supreme.

What is produced today that is remotely capable of eliciting a fraction of the emotional awe that such a painting as this naturally provokes?

it's not really the goal of art 'today'. different society, different economy, different art.

Caravaggio's biblical paintings aren't good because of their emotional awe, sure he has the benefit of painting in his widely copied chiaroscuro style, heightening the dramatic potential but his innovation is more on the reality he puts in his figures, the ugly realness of his Saints. The emotional awe you feel could be said of any Renaissance biblical painter, which weakens the praise. His best works are the open faced boy he drew over and over and Bacchus, whithering away but still inviting.

And for that the inferiority can be generalized. What is the goal of art if not to provoke an emotional response by means of sincere expression? The best novels, musical compositions, and films all share in their ability to influence the soul. We are called hipsters or pretentious for acknowledging the objective superiority of what has been produced in the past yet it is the absence of that quality which once was pivotal to render a work 'art' that has made it so.

>the objective superiority

fatal misstep

art has different goals depending on the cultural context. it's not transcendent. art production, display, critique, is all comprehended in advance by ideology -- how it is 'legitimised' -- which in turn is informed by the media, which art now often employs as critique. the goal of art today is to offer a critique of the institutions that support it, by using them to contradict themselves. a loftier, more intelligent and comprehensive goal than (literally) painting idolatry as piety. a greater influence on society than the exclusive, esoteric pre-industrial art. more relevant, too
