"I wrote V. And The Crying of Lot 49 before I knew anything about writing novels."

what's he mean?

He means nothing, like in the rest of his writing

the statement's meaning is quite obvious

>> No.6744158

Many young writers think of themselves as 'artists' or 'writers' rather than 'storytellers'. Which is problematic because a novel is a medium for telling stories or narratives. I've not read V but Crying of Lot 49 didn't have much of a story going on and it suffers for that.

That's not to say that you can't do a sort of pure writing if you wish and even do it in a really long form book but doing it in the form of a novel and failing to tell a story will always mean you created a bad novel.

When did he say that?

I only know he disliked The Crying of Lot 49, and when he said that he phrased is as he'd forgotten everything about writing he'd learned with V.

And I'm inclined to agree with him, V. is so much better, and remains my second favorite Pynchon after Gravity's Rainbow.

I've read TrueFilm and the vast majority of posts are a whole bunch of nothing. They think they're intelligent because their saw obvious symbolism in a film and never actually get into "deep" discussions. Reddit is full of shitposters that think they're intelligent, 4chan is full of shitposters that know they're shitposters.

Yeah, TV is pretty awful

Similar collage could be easily made for /mu/ and /v/ if you lurk long enough though.

/lit/ is sometimes very eccentric and pretentious, but never plain retarded

This, basically. In TCoL49 Pynchon was too preoccupied with establishing a stylistic voice through maximalism and various experiments in form and neglected the bones of the novel, namely narrative. It gestures toward profundity without actually carrying the same heft as his later works, where story was actually more balanced with all the pomo quirks.

Not that /tv/ doesn't have serious discusion about recent blockbusters anyway. It's all memes and shitposting.

It's in his Slow Learner compilation of his short stories. They aren't very good, but it's interesting to hear comments from the author himself.

Hey I didn't want to start a thread for this, so I'm just posting in the first pinecone I see

What is Against the Day about? Where does it fall in the ranking of pynchon novels? Better than Inherent Vice? Worse than Lot 49? Why doesn't anybody ever talk about it?

>why doesn't anybody ever talk about it?
It's his longest novel and young people have a short attention span. Nobody here has read it.

I actually flipped through the Slower Learner introduction before making that post (haven't actually read it yet) and I only found the line about Lot 49 and forgetting what he'd learned. He says his writing was getting good before Lot 49 (which seems to mean when he was writing V.).

>>6747422
>What is Against the Day about?
The time period between the Chicago World's Fair and the start of WWI (and a little bit after it; the novel actually skips over the war). So it covers a lot of shit and there are tons of characters even for Pynchon, but the most persistent theme is anarchism vs. corporatism. It covers the Colorado labor struggles, the Mexican revolution, occultists in London, arctic exploration, airship battles, and the growing darkness in Europe leading up to WWI, and of course a whole lot more.

I haven't read any Pynchon lite but I rank Against the Day above Lot 49 and below Gravity's Rainbow, V., and Mason & Dixon. I think it's not quite at the level of his best three but it's still great and any Pynchon fan should read it.

GR > V. > Mason & Dixon > Against The Day(currently reading) > The Crying of Lot 49 > Vineland > Inherent Vice

I haven't read Slow Learner or Bleeding Edge
