No Osamu Dazai thread? Why?

«What feelings do you suppose a man has when he realizes that he will never know happiness or glory as long as he lives? Hard work. All that amounts to is food for the wild beasts of hunger.»

«I have never derived the least joy out of amusements. Perhaps that is a sign of the impotence of pleasure. I ran riot and threw myself into wild diversions out of the simple desire to escape from my own shadow.»

I imagine everyone here is suicidal enough as it is.
I really liked No Longer Human though

Yep. Even if Dazai's writing sucked I think I'd like him because of how depressed he was.

Gotta love it when losers project their failings onto the universe.

Pathetic.

That's literally the only argument 90% of /lit/ has against any pessimistic philosophy

>> No.6700400

It's correct though. Pessimism is nothing but a universalised negative value judgement.

Of course optimism is just as nonsensical.

So then shut up if you, and you most likely do, only apply this critiscism to the negative part.

What do you find sensible? Genuinely curious. Suggested reading is nice if you're up to it

>> No.6700422

>>6700411
What I find sensible is not applying a singular value judgement to literally everything as being part of that everything with literally nothing to compare it to.

As Freddy said:

>Judgements, judgements of value about life, for it or against it, can in the end never be true: they have value only as symptoms, they are worthy of consideration only as symptoms; in themselves such judgements are meaningless. One must stretch out one's hands and attempt to grasp this amazing subtlety, that the value of life cannot be estimated. Not by the living, for they are an interested party, even a bone of contention, and not impartial judges; not by the dead, for a different reason.

>> No.6700427

>>6700405
I apply it to both. Saying "existence sucks" or "existence is nice" is like saying "existence is cold" or "existence is hot".

>Pessimism is nothing but a universalised negative value judgement.
Every philosophical branch in the lines of pessimism, nihilism, optimism, etc. has nothing of a negative value judgement, and it's utterly retarded to think of it that way.
Their aim is mainly ease the pain of mankind, and pessimist believe their experience less pain than optimist for example, that often fool themselves into self-deception. You don't seem too well-read in the matter, for it is not a matter of opinion -like several posts seem to consider judgement- but a consideration of human psychology and how the world is experienced. Hardly matter the objective reality if there is such thing, or whatever good can the life bring to people, but only the claim that the pessimist state of mind will avoid the greatest degree of unhappiness than other ways of thinking.
"Everything sucks" it's a rather dull misrepresentation of pessimism, reducing the whole doctrine to a straw man that you can easily criticize.

>> No.6700482

>>6700444
Pessimism is no singular school with a shared aim and your favourite type of negative hedonism doesn't have the sole claim to the title of what really constitutes pessimism.

That said, the very notion that pain should be eased relies on an arbitrary value judgement so even the therapeutic type of pessimism you have in mind isn't really sensible beyond its merits as a coping mechanism.

>> No.6700499

>>6700482
>arbitrary
Precisely that is what pessimists reject, and saying that arbitrary it's a very strong claim to support, as strong as the "everything sucks" ridicule.

All value judgements are obviously arbitrary.Try to argue in favour of a value judgement without resorting to nonsense, it can't be done.

What's wrong with it? You really think you can definitely say "Life is bad."

Go read some Wittgenstein or some Hume.

At least when winners project their success onto the universe its something enviable. People want to be happy. It's pathetic to see a loser try to drag everyone down in the mud with him.

Again missing the point of pessimism.
