Got the first of the series as a gift and it's in my to-read pile. Is it any good?

I'm going to go out on a limb and say no.

Woman writer (and a Patricia at that), title involves the word moon followed by a verb. And the cover involves a sexy "tough" woman.

You forgot quotation marks around "sexy" too.

Eh, I'd hit it. Even though the character is probably an insufferable Mary Sue with so many personality disorders it's not even funny.

The Mercy Thompson Series is a series of urban fantasy novels written by Patricia Briggs that follow the adventures of Mercedes (Mercy) Thompson, a Native American shapeshifter who was raised by Werewolves.
The series is set in the Tri-Cities area of Washington state in an alternate world in which Werewolves and certain types of the fae have been forced to reveal themselves to the public. The series follows Mercy, a VW mechanic by trade, as she learns her true nature and is caught up in the affairs of the local werewolf pack, led by Adam, the Alpha who lives next door, and the local vampire seethe, a member of which she has befriended.

>Mercy's life is not exactly normal. Her next-door neighbor is a werewolf, her former boss is a gremlin, and she's fixing a VW bus for a vampire. But then, Mercy isn't exactly normal herself. She's a walker, not only capable of shifting into coyote shape at will but also possessed of a sharp nose for scenting other creatures and an ability to sense magic when it is at work. So when a teenaged werewolf approaches Mercy asking for work, she knows what he is immediately. She also knows it would be more prudent to refuse him, but he looks so desperate that she hires him anyway.

>Turns out the werewolf, who goes by Mac, has escaped from a laboratory where he was being experimented on. When bad guys show up looking for him and Mercy kills one of them, also a werewolf, she realizes it's time to turn the matter over to the local Alpha werewolf, who also happens to be her divorced next-door neighbor Adam.

The next one will be released Feb2011 and will be called River Marked.

I didn't want to like it. A guy friend gushed over it, so I read it to be polite and LIKED it. I found it engaging and suspenseful enough to be really enjoyable.

I liked the character too, and it's easy for me to be snarky about female characters. A decent read.

A "guy friend gushed over it". I think you used the wrong vowel there. It's spelled with an 'a', not a 'u'.

inb4 gashed.
