Anti-depressants combined with regular CBT is a godsend for people with major depression, and dave died after he quit taking them. He was a moron who continually downplayed the role pharmacology played in saving his life, probably because of the same shame/embarrassment/ingrained protestantism that caused me to suffer for years before I could admit I needed outside help.

People who casually bash mental health treatment without knowing what the fuck they're talking about actively make life worse and contribute to people's deaths.

He was a very good writer who crafted an unnecessary persona driven by a set of values I recognize in myself and other earnest young dorks I know who grew up in the American Midwest. I liked Dave's work very much in high school and my early college years, and if I'm extra critical of him now you can relax knowing that he would likely enjoy serving as a vessel for my excess self-hatred.

There are big problems with pharmaceuticals, particularly the production and supply of them, but this pseudo-intellectual waffle you're espousing as a knee-jerk reaction to anti-depressants is pretty uninformed, callous, and detached from real life and the people who take anti-depressants.

There are plenty of people are don't have any reason to take them and are pushed into it by drug-culture. But I'd very much like you to have loved ones who would literally be dead without them, and then keep espousing this shit about them not saving a single life.
