I liked the parts having to do with music, and thought that the mary sueness was going to pay off when he actually turned out to fuck everything up. this isn't eroctic this is a celebration of death and dead "...wedding funeral..." just like he said. eroticism has to be more vivid, more vibrant although lucien/lucifer proved again that "the only real temple in this world is the (living) human body" as he treated the corpses with affection, with utmost tenderness, but i'm sure there's no difference between caressing a peice of wood and a dead body (at least from a non nicrophiliac perspective).

Main character from No Longer Human hides behind this jokey persona that he has built. If you've seen interviews with Robin, you will notice that he can't go 30 seconds without jumping out of his chair and trying to make people laugh. Anything to avoid talking about himself.

They both develop severe alcoholism.

They both attempt suicide. One succeeded. The end of No Longer Human is told by a woman who knew the narrator, calling him a happy, lovable person.

> Snyder will have none of it. His condemnation of the partisans is total. “Partisan warfare,” he writes, “was (and is) illegal, since it undermines the convention of uniformed armies directing violence against each other rather than against surrounding populations.” The effect of partisan warfare, therefore, was to exacerbate conditions in Belarus and other areas by subjecting locals to an “escalation of both German and Soviet violence.”

The point is that it didn't help them to resist, and those who chose not to resist were instead targetted by partisans and Nazis much harder because of those who did, and also that this was the already established outcome of partisan warfare which is why it was stupid to engage in it to begin with, and destructive of Soviet authorities to encourage it.

Compare it to the activities of the resistance movement on the western front and you see why it did more harm than good.

Mostly it was a joke I didn't execute right, but Mersault was not as cool and comfortable with his emotional situation as he appears to be. His most telling moment is the breakdown at the end shows that his indifference is really a mask for intense loathing and anguish. I would also argue that he is man of principle but almost as a form of collateral damage. In his heart he is outraged by the Magistrate's evangelization, the Court's bullshit, society, fate, etc., but he resolved long ago that if he couldn't fight it he would just "not play the game." However by being forced to accept or reject the Magistrate's salvation, chooses to continue to stay out of the game as a principled stance. As to whether or not he is conscious of his stance, the text would imply dimly.

a close reading of The Metamorphosis reveals an incredibly compassionate examination of Gregor's family. Gregor's transformation and eventual death allowed all his family to escape Gregor's oppressive reign and self-actualize. How do the views of Gregor hold the family back? Are you saying that because he worked and supplied for the family they became sedentary and dependent on him, and by extension he was holding them back?

>> No.6616131

>>6616118
At the beginning of the novella Gregor's "plan" for his family was that his father was too elderly and decrepit to work and his sister was to enroll in a conservatory to become a violin protege. Throughout the course of the story we find out that A) the father is more than capable of working and, indeed, seems to be flourishing because of it and B) Grete's violin playing isn't actually good. Gregor and the family thinks it is, but when she plays for an outside party (the travellers) its revealed that in reality she is decent at best.

Gregor is a narcissist. He has constructed a version of reality in which his family is completely dependent on him because he wants them to be completely dependent on him. It is only through the reversal of dependency that his family flourishes.

The ending image of the Metamorphosis is Grete stretching in the golden sunshine, finally totally free of Gregor.
