I, Claudius and Claudius the God (Graves
Memoirs of Hadrian (Yourcenar)
Oeuvre au noir / The Abyss (??) (Yourcenar)
Death of Vergil (Broch)
Julian (Gore Vidal)
Maurice Druon's Rois Maudits / Accursed Kings series

Mantel's Wolf Hall and Bring Up The Bodies are solid and will probably continue to be read much after more 'literary' writers of today have disappeared, but I don't think they fall among the greats of historical fiction. Maybe the third book will change my mind though.

I have a personal childhood soft spot for Rosemary Sutcliff and her Roman Britain novels like Eagle of the Ninth.

I really liked the Grail Quest series by Bernard Cornwell, dude is great at painting a vivid picture of medieval life and large scale historical battles.

Did someone actually make a Pepe doll? I don't know if that's embarrassing or actually kind of cute. I guess both in equal measure are Pepe's style.

When they finally revealed the creature's identity, it got way too outlandish.
I recently read the Buried Giant by Kazuo Something. It was set in medieval arthurian england complete with fantasy forklore elements. I enjoyed that it was less 'grand destiny' and more 'fantasy road trip.'

I enjoyed it. Not going to win any 'muh prose' awards but a good action adventure novel that was also informative about Japan and England/Holland's attempt to disrupt Portugal's trade monopoly with Japan.
