The Five most pleasant writers, from what I know are Shakespeare (just an overall great guy), Chaucer (although he may possibly have raped or kidnapped someone), Walter Scott, Montaigne and Chekhov, whose life honestly reads like hagiography: supporting his brothers and sisters once his father left, providing free medical care to peasants in Russia and Sakhalin, lying to his younger sister whilst he was dying of Tuberculosis to protect her feelings and being generally very humble about his substantial literary talent. The only bad things I've ever really seen about Chekhov is that he often argued and got angrywith Tolstoy (although this is the late evangelical Tolstoy) and even here he was pleasant or at least less unpleasant than Tolstoy who called his plays as "worse than Shakespeare". An insult that seems much worse if one reads Tolstoy on King Lear.

Fucking Crime and Punishment could have been half as long and it would have changed nothing. Except for maybe more of Marmeladov. He was great.
