Goethe wrote:

Patricians: How do you conduct yourself around philistines? Is it best to keep quiet about philosophical and literary topics with obnoxious brutes?

Plebeians: How would you ideally like a patrician to treat you? When you come in contact with superior beings like me, do you want to be goaded out of your vulgar taste in video games, Hollywood movies, sports, and fantasy/sci-fi literature? Or would you rather be left to decay in mediocrity and treated like the animal you are?

I use the one strike method. If I detect one iota of philistinism in the person I am conversing with I look them in the eye and tell them how much they nauseate me, detail by detail. If they are abnormally vulgar, I will not hesitate to remove my glove and slap them across the face. There is nothing more gratifying than physically assaulting someone with no appreciation of the arts.

All memes aside, you don't need to "become" something. You're just you.
Striving to be what you already are is stupid, so just be.

I actually subconsciously used the word gentleman since I didn't even notice the image in the OP.
Interesting.

I avoid them for the most part. When we do come into contact there aren't typically many words exchanged, mostly because they're serving me at a restaurant or working behind a counter at a store.

I feel bad right now, because of that whole issue.

A friend of mine is a designer of videogames. I asked him about his thoughts about "The Work of Art in the Age of Mechanical Reproduction" by Walter Benjamin, if it could be applied to videogames etc. Because of his very "deterministic" Weltbild he didn't even consider the possibility of an aura etc. etc.

His answers were about the lines of >>6516488 ,without any hint of irony.

Being quiet is best. 98% of philistines are beyond help and determined to stay that way, and they'll get mad if you try to broaden their horizons.

That idea really irks me. They can see around them and they haven't ever met anyone who seriously defended books as art and videogames as childish entertainment; they don't even know why people would say that because they haven't been really exposed to that. They do know how much vidja are shown and how much money goes there, while so little goes to literature and no advertizement or attention is given to it. Why do they play the victim then? They are clearly winning, why insist that they are the underdog?
I get the feeling this is like the US playing the victim all the time and pretending every single war they were in was started by the enemy.

No true patrician would ever allow their subject privilege to displace the centre of someone else's experience. Treating someone as they OUGHT to be implies you somehow know better than they do what they want to become and are capable of becoming; yet you are nothing but a spectator to the development of something you can never possibly comprehend, the development of the subject who is not you. Accept that, and you are finally on the path to patriciandom.

Appeal to authority :-)

Art is communication - video games are generally bad at communication, compared to other media.
