Really grateful for the laugh OP, thank you.

Hitchens has some of the most zealous admirers I've ever seen.

I actually like him, I read his books and articles and I watch his lectures online, but during his lectures for example it's common for someone during question time to criticize him some way or another. After they're done, Hitchens could say literally anything and he'd be received by thunderous applause and laughter, it's enfuriating.

Islam, true Islam, true submittance to Allah and Muhammad's word as his messenger, can not, and should not ever be accepted in a free and democratic society. It is not freedom to allow the existence of an ideology that's main purpose is to subjugate and destroy all others. That is what true Islam is, and all else, even watered down Islam, is haram to the true followers of the prophet. It's not freedom accept it, it's stupidity.

What specifically does anyone disagree with Hitchens on. Seems to me he didn't say all that much that was controversial he just said it in a way to make a scene because he enjoyed it. I've heard him speak and don't know what he's about other than that

You sound like a bigot, do you have any evidence for your conspiracy theory? The Middle East is violent because it's being exploited by the west. The people there wouldn't be resorting to religious fanaticism if their basic material needs were met and not stolen from them. The west are the real terrorists, we should be fighting against violent capitalist expansion rather than poor foreigners who're only trying to defend their way of life. The fact that the Caliphates 1,000 years ago were the most advanced places on earth prove that Islam has nothing to do violence or suppression of freedom/knowledge.

But I don't. We live in this world, now. We don't live in the time of the inquisitions or the time of Jewish tribes subjugating non-believers. We live in a time were all major world religions have come to a place of relative tolerance and acceptance.

Besides Islam. The followers of Islam, the truest followers of Islam who carry out Muhammad's call to jihad, are killing people every single day, and receiving support from a large part of the Muslim following. This is happening in our world, now, and as it is a vital part of their religion, it will never go away.

So I don't think we should ban Islam. I think we should wipe it out.

I would agree, had it not been violent since Islam's foundation and all through out history.

I disagree. Islam in something with more than 1,000 years of history and Wahhabism, Qutbism and all radical traditions are pretty recent. They all started following the economic and political imperialism of the british, they were all first conceived as tools of independence, the members they recruit are often peasants living in the most backwards of places, etc. There's way too many historically relative economic and political implications in Islam's radicalism to follow this line of thinking.

And so is the question of tolerance and secularism historically relative as well. Jews in the Iberian Peninsula following the Reconquista who could afford it chose to emigrated to muslim territories. Decades ago many of these places who are now seen as bastions of islamic fundamentalism had progressive, secularist governments that were removed not by popular consent but by military action, etc.
