Should I read some philosophy first or should I just start reading standard books? I want to be able to get everything I can out of normal books so I guess having a background in philosophy would help with this right? On the other hand I've heard that normal books are very boring once you know philosophy because you realize they're all just regurgitated philosophical ideas.

Read both at the same time.

Actually philosophy is boring by itself, and it is only after being transformed into Art that it becomes interesting. And even then, philosophy is mostly irrelevant to most great art.

This is the only answer. Unlike works of fiction, which are best consumed in sequence, works of nonfiction can complement each other in important ways and should be read together.

Both literature and art are forms of inquiry into experience. To prefer one over the other, or to deny that a robust understanding of one requires an interplay with the other is incredibly naive.

You can boil all art down into it's philosophical essence. Unless you have an infinite amount of time on earth you should read philosophy first so that you know what art you dismiss on philosophical grounds.

It's the quickest and least pleasant path to understanding, if that's not your thing read fiction.
