"Beauty is not the goal of competitive sports, but high-level sports are a prime venue for the expression of human beauty. The relation is roughly that of courage to war. The human beauty we’re talking about here is beauty of a particular type; it might be called kinetic beauty. Its power and appeal are universal. It has nothing to do with sex or cultural norms. What it seems to have to do with, really, is human beings’ reconciliation with the fact of having a body."

- Tupac Shakur

Agree or disagree, /lit/? Is sport and athletic competition a fit subject for serious intellectuals and for literary treatment? Or is it just a distraction for plebs?

FUCK OFF SPORTS ARE SPORTS

Following sports is following religion.
Playing sports is playing god.

You taking DFW as an authority to even consider on anything related to sports says a lot about your character. He MAYBE dabbled in tennis and it was motivated by an aesthetic judgement if anything. This dude was a fucking asshole who made it his life mission to be the faggot priest. If you don't like sports, accept it, you don't need to rationalize it to yourself by over-intellectualizing it.

Here is a much more meaningful sports related quote: "Worse come to worse ... my motto is, 'When in doubt, shoot the ball.' So when in doubt, I'm going to shoot it and hopefully that don't catch nobody off guard."

there is kinetic beauty. but you don't find that in sports whatsoever, which are braindead plebs preforming for braindead plebs. watch some dance (ballet, not contemporary shit). they're athletes with artistry.

Read your post back to yourself and ask yourself why you do this.

Yes, miraculous feats of athleticism are beautiful.

I think that this can be seen in its purest form in martial arts and yeah, tennis too, I guess, but only in that it is a one-to-one competition . The Greeks knew it in the form of wrestling (a celebration of skill and the human form) and war in general (just look at the figure of Achilles). But for more modern times, look at boxing: I'm hard-pressed to find a more perfect athlete than Michael Gerard Tyson. Watch these clips and remember that each fight consists of two men on as equal footing as possible.

Watch the at the combination at 1:14. Count the punches he lands four and misses one. In a second. . In the same clip (1:31):
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1z9mbQk58B0
the professional announcer who watches these events for a living can't even catch all of them.

The complete domination here is almost unsettling. People like Tyson have taken traits inherent to themselves and then made themselves into divine machines after near-constant training. There is a something in their actions that transcends the base human form. This is present elsewhere (such as in the thought processes of amazing individuals in philosophy, mathematics, science, literature, art, etc.) but only in sports does it manifest itself in the kinetic form. These people are physical geniuses. That's beautiful, yeah

It exists in team sports as well. Just look at the way barry sanders runs.
