You know, if you ask questions, there maybe people in this thread that can educate you on art.

>> No.6449823

I would like these threads a lot more if we agreed to only post about certain movements, for example impressionism one thread and then cubism or Modern Art, or sculpture the next. Also I think one should have to post his opinion on the portrait he posts and others can critique/ add to the conversation.

O, God, anon :(

I'm so sorry but I'm afraid I arrived too late for you to see my post.

Anyway, there's a school of artists you should look for. The main one is Odd Nerdrum. Pic related

I still don't really love him, but I thing he's very good. I'm seeing a resurgence of figurative art, though, and I think in a few decades we shall have new Rembrandts, Cezanned and Chagalls walking on this Earth once again. :)

Long live real art. Down with conceptual crap.

Can someone explain something to me? I believe the reasoning behind resisting realistic fine art in favor of abstract art is to get political and claim the old shite is not just old but exploitative? As in, classic, realistic fine art is patrician and reeking of privilege?

But you still need a bunch of money and connections to get anywhere with abstract art. More importantly, you need a silver tongue to convince some ritchie rich people that they'll gain some status if they blow millions of dollars on YOUR basket of dirty laundry that you spent all of five minutes preparing for the auction house. Doesn't this mean that abstract art becomes a matter of hiring the best PR team with a fuckload of money and connections that you probably got your hands on through an astounding amount of nepotism and privilege? Am I missing something here?

Yes you are missing a great deal.
>getting political
is at the most an extremely tangential and incomplete 'justification' for a move towards abstraction. For a more complete understanding, look towards a factor like the shift in understanding of human perception towards a more 'holistic' stance (i.e. subjective experience of time and space/the dissolution of the discrete 'moment') from the more 'divine' and unitary position of traditional one-point perspective. Certainly politics is potentially relevant, but always in a secondary way. Obviously commodification is a factor that has and will continue to influence the trajectory of expression in general in the last centuries and into the future.

Honestly, most of my understanding of recent art history comes from philosophy and literature - I often find that from philosophy in particular, artistic stances can be meaningfully grounded or tested. This isn't to say that philosophy is 'superior' in some way, but there does seem to be a potent sort of interplay. Things like Nietzsche, Heidegger, Deleuze.. But as far as Art History - The book "Art Since 1900: Modernism, Antimodernism, Postmodernism" is a fairly comprehensive catalogue of recent trajectories, and no doubt a good start. If you pick it up though, just be aware that the authors have a very very strident critical stance and a lot of the editorializing they do is somewhat dubious. However if you get through this I would imagine you'd come out of it with the knowledge to being to pick apart their bullshit from their real.

> I believe the reasoning behind resisting realistic fine art in favor of abstract art is to get political and claim the old shite is not just old but exploitative?
Though, that's actually not it. The real question is why abstract art was not appreciated back then. What happends is whenever a new technique appear that takes over an older one, this older one has to rethink itself and its specific things. The most proeminent technique in question here is photography and its ability to reproduce the visible. This shifted painting into thinking its role and allowed painters to try to find what is unique about it. It started with impressionists, expressionists, then into fauvism, cubism, etc and of course, it goes towards the abstract a bit more.

There are other factors as well, these painters had a different role in society, much like museums had a different role and how people were intaking art in new ways and for new purposes. The images themselves are put into question, what do we want from these pictures? For them to fulfill our fantasies? For them to reinforce our ideology? What is it?

What you proceed to talk about is art market and honestly, in my personal opinion, it has always been full of shit. Money and recognition always only came through the same way. At a time, art was a craft and the studios and ateliers were more of large workshops producing new objects on demand of society. Museums and galleries are just one way to take art. Naturalistic stuff, abstract stuff, bad and good stuff alike, they get pushed just the same way, depending on what the speculators want to sell and profit at a given time.

If you want to know more, a good introduction to that transition is The Shock of The New by Robert Hughes. There is a six episode documentary on it as well and it's full on youtube. The same Robert Hughes did another documentary (not as good though, jesus, documentaries are much worse today...) recently about how the art market shifted during the 60s and 70s, also on youtube, search The Mona Lisa Curse.

>> No.6450281

>>6450105
No, you are not. That's precisely it.

The same Robert Hughes mentioned above also made a doc criticizing contemporary conceptual post-modern crap. Roger Scruton has one too.

Ignore all this conceptual crap, it isn't worth your time. It isn't worth anyone's time despite what pseudo-intellectuals like those in this thread want you to think.

>> No.6450299

>>6450281
I mentioned the documentary itself, it's the Mona Lisa Curse. Also, Hughes does not criticize "conceptual post-modern crap", but shows that the market is overshadowing the works of artists and raising bad stuff over good stuff without any critical thinking being involved there. He likes conceptual art as much as he likes a lot of other types of art, given that there are good and bad examples of each.

And Roger Scruton is an idiot.

And the anon was not talking about contemporary art or conceptual art or post-modern art, but abstract art, which have a huge load of variations, some conceptual, some far from it, some contemporary, some pretty old by now.
