Which translation of The Upanishads should I buy?

>> No.6443819

The Greek one

>> No.6443842

Juan Mascaro writes well but he often uses Christian terminology and analogy, which can be confusing.

The one you have pictured here (Olivelle) is considered the standard.

Yes, of course!

If I like the translation enough, maybe I will learn Sanskrit and read the original.

Olieville is really good. Footnotes are fantastic. By the way that volume contains 10 of the more discussed/read Upanisads, but there are in fact hundreds of "Upanisads," written over a 2,000 year period.

Yeah, that's something else that makes this process tricky: I want to buy a good translation, but I also want to buy a translation that contains a lot of material.

The King James Version, of course.

Start with Olieville and then go from there. What you'll realize pretty quickly is that these ancient texts get really distorted in translation and that there are passages nobody knows what the fuck they mean. It's philosophical, sure, but it's also hoary and primitive.
