I was in an intro to philosophy class, and we were discussing one of Plato's dialogues, though I forget which one. In any case, the professor brought up the question "how is learning possible?", and introduced two theories that attempt to answer it: Innatism and the tabula rasa theory. My question to you guys, since all kinds of Google searches haven't turned up anything, is: are there any rival theories that contradict both of these theories. This is not homework, in case you were wondering. I'm not actually enrolled in the class, just wanted to check it out. This just something I was wondering about. Thanks in advance.

Of course there are. There are many that have varying degrees of each, the most important there being Kant saying that while we do learn only from experience our brains are prepared to structure things a certain way.
You can also consider more modern approaches that propose that there are certain understandings that come from our brain mapping, for example language.

Your teacher was describing the rift in the early modernism between Descartes and Hume. Some people like to jump from the cave allegory to that.
